December 03, 2020:
There are two important things to keep in mind when you're considering a tape gun. First, and it probably goes without saying, the blades found on these can be very sharp. Keep them away from children, and always operate them with caution. Second, even though many are pictured with tape, most do not arrive with any; you'll have to purchase this separately. There are a few exceptions, however, like the Tape King TX300, which comes with one 60-yard roll. But even so, if you're planning a big move or project, this likely will not be enough. You'll probably want to grab more when you get the rest of your supplies, from moving blankets to furniture dollies.
As for top choices, we think it's currently tough to beat the Scotch Box H180 and the Uline H-157. There's no flimsy construction or sticking tape here; these models are made to withstand heavy use over the long haul. In fact, you really can't go wrong with any model from Uline, although the same can't necessarily be said of Scotch. Their lightweight models made for at-home use can sometimes be finicky, like the Scotch ST-181, which requires more pressure than some to cut through tape cleanly.
We've also kept two models that offer something slightly different. These are the Ecobox E-560, which has a quiet design that doesn't screech as loud as most, and the 3M ATG 700, made for ATG tape. Count on the latter for framing pictures or working on commercial print assemblies, rather than for applying run-of-the-mill packing tape. We removed the Tach-It MN2, though, since many find that the tape sticks in use.

Added the Prosun TG01 due to its adaptive design for accommodating thick and thin tape as well as its dual rollers that ensure the unit continues to operate smoothly, even when its supply runs low. Though it's not necessarily a traditional tape gun, I felt the 3M ATG 700 was also worthy of inclusion because of the clean delivery of its adhesive strips and the rewinding inner liner, which cuts back on potential messes. Also included the Tape King TX300 for its heavy-duty construction, side-loading design, and comfortable pistol grip for constant use. The metal loading gate, combined with a durable serrated blade made the Royal Imports Industrial a good option to add as well. Finally, included the Scotch ST-181 because of its retractable blade for safety and extra-large core.
