This wiki has been updated 24 times since it was first published in March of 2019. You'd think that water would be soft and forgiving, but if you smack the back of your head against it -- or a rock beneath it -- it can cause a serious injury. Protect your gray matter with one of these kayak helmets, which cushion your skull against all kinds of impacts. They won't make you bulletproof, however, so don't take any unnecessary risks while shooting the rapids. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

March 29, 2019:

We like the Tontron Multi-Sports due to its versatility, as athletic types can keep it in their car for use in just about any sport, from kayaking to skateboarding. Its strap system holds it snug on your head even if you're moving around a bunch, so you shouldn't need to stop what you're doing to adjust it very often.

Other than versatility and protection, the biggest factor that distinguishes one model from another is comfort, and that is largely affected by the way in which the helmet is secured. We like the Vihir Dial because it's easy to tighten to your liking, and you can even do so one-handed. It's simple to get on and off as well, thanks to the quick-release buckle. Meanwhile, the foam inside the Triple Eight Halo molds to your head over time, so you can get a truly personalized feel if you wear it long enough. That's somewhat offset by the discomfort of having soaking wet straps clinging to your face, however.
