Editor's Notes

January 14, 2021:

Most people know that Dell makes great laptops, and these days they're not all terribly expensive. The XPS 7390 has a great balance of price and performance, and it's designed for all-day use on the go. The XPS 13 and XPS 15 are, unsurprisingly, still among the best. For 17-inch models, we like the Inspiron 3000 for its affordability, and the Inspiron 7000 for its all-around premium build, fast hardware, and 2-in-1 design, which is a rare for such a large laptop.

September 10, 2019:

Dell is renowned for producing high-quality computers of all types, and their extensive line of laptops is no exception. You will notice, though, that their naming schemes are a bit confusing, as sometimes one, two or even zero digits can distinguish wildly different models from one another. We've gathered some of the freshest releases, including 11- and 14-inch Chromebooks that are very and somewhat affordable, respectively. The Inspiron line contains some moderately and mid-level-priced options, including the highly versatile 7000, which is a great 2-in-1 choice for fans of full HD shows and movies. The 7573 is noteworthy because it's full of surprisingly capable parts, even though it's not terribly expensive. Overall, though, the XPS 15 7590 is one of the most impressive machines they offer, as it's packed with high-end features like an Ultrasharp 4K display and enough processing power to make you forget you're using a portable computer with great battery life.

Of course, no discussion of Dell laptops would be complete without mentioning their highly respected Alienware portable gaming family. They come in 15- and 17-inch models and are quite high-powered, with cutting-edge graphics cards and, in some cases, high-end G-Sync displays that essentially eliminate screen tearing and judder while also minimizing input lag. They're pretty expensive, but then again, so are standalone desktop graphics cards, and those offer zero portability and draw a ton of electricity.
