This wiki has been updated 24 times since it was first published in March of 2018. Fighting clutter is a never-ending battle, as it can seem like as soon as you get one mess sorted out, another two pop up in its place. If you're trying to keep your living space neat and tidy, these storage containers can help tame the piles of junk and bric-a-brac that are taking over your home. And once you get your stuff in order, you'll have an excuse to buy more stuff (Don't do that). When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

May 27, 2020:

We have looked for a range of storage containers, but it's important to note that a container's stated exterior dimensions may not indicate the amount of storage space inside. Thick plastic, sloped walls, and more can mean smaller interior dimensions than might be expected, so pay close attention if you have specific items you'd like to put in a container. Keep in mind, too, that unlike storage baskets, most have lids, but these containers still may not be entirely sealed against the elements or bugs. In fact, that's why we selected the Iris USA Weathertight. It is appropriate for items that need to stay dry and clean, and as a bonus, it's offered in a range of sizes, so there's one for all needs. The Rubbermaid Commercial Brute comes in a close second when it comes to keeping its contents protected, but it is opaque, so you won't be able to tell at a glance what's inside unless you label it somehow.

If these models are too utilitarian, you might instead consider the Household Essentials Basket, the iwill Create Pro Closet, or the mDesign Bins. Of the three, the former is perhaps the most attractive, but it's also the least sturdy, so you should plan to treat it at least somewhat gently. The mDesign containers are plain but sleek, with a clean, modern feel that works everywhere from the bathroom to the kitchen. Plus, they are a cinch to wash, so if you choose to store food or sunscreen in them — and find yourself with a mess on your hands — they're easy enough to clean up. If you like the look, but need a lid, there's the Sterilite Flip Top. They aren't airtight, but they'll keep everything inside relatively secure, and at a budget-friendly price.
