This wiki has been updated 31 times since it was first published in October of 2015. Spade bits, also known as paddle bits, are attachments for high-speed drills that are used to bore large-diameter holes, and come in specialized versions designed to work on wood, plastic, or drywall. We've included assorted kits with varying profiles that will satisfy the needs of construction professionals, carpenters, and home DIY enthusiasts. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

July 25, 2019:

The Bosch DSB5014P Daredevil and the Bosch NS5006 top our list because they offer the best performance. The threaded cone tips are very useful because they center the bit where you want it and pull the bit through the cut. The Daredevil set has nice outward facing spurs that help create clean walls and reduce clean-up.

The IRWIN Tools Speedbor Max 1801022 is an excellent set that we included even though, strictly speaking, they are tri-flue bits(they are ranked lower to reflect this). They are included in this list because they function in a similar way to spade bits(particularly spade bits with contoured paddles) and they are used for the same tasks. They also produce relatively clean holes.

All spade bits have a tendency to produce splintering at the exit of the bore, particularly when working with softwoods like pine or Douglas fir. To eliminate this problem, if possible, you should drill through both sides and refrain from pushing the bit all the way through the stock.

Working with drill bits and drills is dangerous and should only be done by experienced individuals who take the proper safety precautions. One of which is to use breathing protection to avoid inhaling harmful wood particles.
