This wiki has been updated 17 times since it was first published in January of 2019. Having to keep track of multiple medications and dosages can be difficult, especially for people with dementia or memory issues, but with these smart pill dispensers, you don't have to worry about forgetting your meds or, potentially worse, taking them twice. Not only will they help keep you organized, but some even provide notifications via Bluetooth of Wi-Fi connectivity. When users buy our independently chosen editorial recommendations, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

September 29, 2020:

Remembering to take medications can be a hassle even for young, clear-minded individuals. When someone is suffering from dementia, a brain injury, or simply getting up there in age, it can be even more difficult. Luckily, these smart pill dispensers, nearly all of which provide dosage reminders can be very helpful. In fact, the only option we have included that doesn't provide any notifications is the MedCenter Smartpack Mini Monthly, but since it still helps you keep a month's worth of pills organized and is small enough to take on the go, we thought it worthwhile to include. Plus, since it is convenient to keep on hand, you can simply set your smartphone with alerts for when it is time to take pills throughout the day.

For those who take a lot of pills and want a fully automated system, and for whom budget is no issue, the PharmAdva MedaCube is probably the top choice. It stores up to 90 days worth of as many as 12 medications and will automatically sort and dispense them for you. In addition to providing audible alerts to anyone nearby, it can also be programmed to send out text, e-mail, or phone notifications when it is time to take pills or a dosage has been missed.

While the E-pill MedTime Station, E-pill MedSmart Voice, E-pill MedSmart Plus are all great for home use, with their month's worth of storage. If you travel often, these are probably going to be too bulky to take on the go. So, if you need something you can take along on vacations, or simply to and from the office, the Med-Q Amazin, Sagely Sleek Weekly Organizer, iRemember Talking Cap, Ddida Medication Reminder, and MedCenter Smartpack Mini Monthly are going to be much better options. That being said, some of the larger options have features that aren't found in the more compact selections. For example, the E-pill MedTime Station is ideal for anyone with arthritis, as all you have to do is pull a handle and it dumps your meds into a stainless steel cup that is easy to grasp, and all three of them can be locked with a key to prevent kids or anyone else from tampering with the contents.

Included a broad selection of medication-tracking solutions—from programmable bottle caps for a single prescription to compartmentalized systems that deliver reminders and doses over various timeframes. There are options for use by individuals and within facilities with multiple medications needing to be monitored. Some also feature rubber grips for patients with tremors or other fine-motor control issues. Other useful features include push-through caps, audible alerts with adjustable volumes, and lighted displays.
