The 10 Best Planer Blades
This wiki has been updated 24 times since it was first published in February of 2019. If your planer has been struggling to shave lumber down to the desired thickness, it may be time to think about changing the blades. These options are sharp and versatile for all kinds of projects, and many can be honed or reversed to extend their lifespans. Just be sure whichever ones you buy will be compatible with your machine — and watch out for pesky nails and screws. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.
Editor's Notes
April 26, 2019:
The Byrd Tool Shelix DW735 is one of the more unique options on this list, and is only suitable for machines, not handheld units. It made the list because it makes some truly impressive cuts, and does so cleanly, with little dust or debris left behind. When you combine its tidiness with its relatively quiet operation, you get a unit that's suitable for use in garage or basement shops.
Many of the items on our list — like the HZ Portable, for instance — are compatible with a wide range of planers. That's not true in all cases, though, so double-check for compatibility before making a purchase.
Decide how much being able to resharpen the blade is worth to you. There are several here that can be honed when necessary, but most of the higher-end models shouldn't need sharpening that often anyway, so you may be better off paying more up front and saving yourself some time down the road. Also, if you buy a cheaper blade and it breaks on a screw, being able to resharpen it won't be worth much at that point, so take overall quality into consideration.
