This wiki has been updated 27 times since it was first published in January of 2019. While you might be able to get by with any old helmet, snowmobile riders know that there's no substitute for the convenience and comfort that a modular model can afford while out on the trail. Incorporating flip-up designs and a host of additional features that help prevent fogging, icing and other cold weather-related issues, they'll help you get the most out of your next backcountry adventure. Editor's Notes

February 18, 2021:

Modular helmets add an extra element of convenience to the riding experience, as they are more versatile than standard models. By being able to lift the chin guard up and over the helmet, a rider will find it easier to converse with others, ventilate their face, and get a little sun, when required. While all helmets' primary function is to protect your head from impacts, a good snowmobile helmet is designed with cold riding conditions in mind, and there are some unique features that set them apart from motorcycle models.

Most include double-paned face shields that create a layer of insulation and prevent fogging, while some, such as the 509 Delta R4 Ignite, Castle X EXO-CX950, and Polaris 2.0, incorporate heating elements into the shield to make vision much clearer. These also feature breath boxes, which deflect warm exhaled air down and away from the face shield, and are effective anti-fog devices that also prevent excessive moisture build-up within the helmet.

Another important factor that sets snowmobile helmets apart from regular bike helmets is their warmth. While the latter usually have vents to help keep the head cool, their cold-weather counterparts are double-insulated to protect the rider from frigid air temperatures. This also serves to protect the ears from excessive engine noise and the rush of apparent wind, improving focus and stamina when out in the backcountry.

Aside from their flip-up designs, modular snowmobiles helmets can come with a range of additional features aimed at making your next outing as enjoyable as possible. Of course, though, the more features a helmet has, the pricier it is. We've included options that run the gamut, from the bare-bones X4 304 Anti-Fog, which offers little more in the way of convenience than its flip-up face shield, to the HJC CL-MAX2BTSN, which incorporates everything from Bluetooth recesses to an electric heat lens. Our top pick, the Ski-Doo Modular 3, includes neither of those things, but is well-regarded for its comfort and straightforward utility.
