Editor's Notes

February 10, 2021:

We replaced the Philips Hue Ambiance with the Philips Hue Starter Kit – which comprises three A19 bulbs and one hub with a 50-light capacity – and swapped out the GE Daylight for the GE Relax — which are a sensible and affordable replacement for typical, old-school, 60-watt incandescents. We also removed the Henlixin Warm, Hyperikon Wide and TCP Recessed, due to availability issues, and added the Sylvania Smart+, which aren’t compatible with Apple HomeKit, but work well with several other smart-home systems.

The benefits of using LED lights inside your home include their longevity and durability, as well as the fact that they don’t get very hot, unlike their incandescent counterparts. They’re also energy efficient; in fact, you can save as much as 80% on your electricity costs by using this type of light.

The Sunco PAR38 six-pack join the list as a reliable selection with a wide dimming range from 10% to 100%. In addition to use inside homes and offices, they’re also great for damp locations (that aren’t exposed directly to water) like basements, garages, and covered driveways, decks, and porches. Sunco upholds high performance and safety standards, reflected in the fact that these bulbs are both UL certified and Energy Star listed. They contain no mercury and don’t emit UV or IR. They come with a generous five-year warranty.

The Phililps Hue Ambiance retains the top spot, as it offers plenty of nifty features, not the least of which is that offers 50,000 shades of white. (You read that right.) You can change it with your mood or your needs (think studying, watching TV, mealtimes, and so on). This smart light can be controlled with your smartphone via a downloadable app, by which you can change the color or dim the bulb. It can achieve maximum brightness immediately when you switch it on. In addition, it conveniently can be controlled with your voice through Alexa or SmartThings hubs.

Also note that several of the selections here are suitable for illuminating damp spaces, like basements and garages, and well-covered outdoor spaces like porches, decks, and carports. You’ll likely want more than one bulb, and most here conveniently come in multi-packs. Most are also dimmable, which is great for setting a mood or making a room suitable for a variety or activities like studying or watching TV.
