Match The Light To The Job
If you want real task light under kitchen cabinets, a plug-in or hardwired fixture is the better answer.
Battery LED lights are small. Most of the pucks and bars here put out 40 to 150 lumens, while a standard 60-watt bulb gives about 800, according to the FTC's light bulb guide. That is plenty inside a closet, a pantry or a cabinet, and on a dark stair, but not for chopping vegetables on a counter. If you want real task light under kitchen cabinets, a plug-in or hardwired fixture is the better answer.
A tap puck suits places you open for a minute: press the lens, grab what you need, press it again. A motion light suits places where your hands are full, such as a pantry, a laundry nook or a hallway. These use passive infrared sensors that react to the heat of a moving body, as Adafruit's sensor guide explains, so a pet or a burst of warm air from a vent can set them off too. Most switch on for about 20 seconds and have a setting that keeps them off in daylight.
Remote pucks are for mood and display shelves: one press runs the whole set. Strips follow a shelf edge or the back of a TV, and fairy lights are decor only.
Batteries Are The Running Cost
Count the cells before you buy. Most pucks take three AAA or three AA batteries each, so a six-pack of AA pucks needs 18. Makers' runtime claims assume light use; a light in a busy hallway can drain a set within weeks. Battery University notes that alkaline cells are made for light loads and lose much of their capacity under heavier draw, while nickel-metal hydride rechargeables and lithium AA cells hold up better. For a light you use every day, rechargeable cells or a light with a built-in USB-C battery pay off quickly.
Built-in batteries have their own trade-off. MCGOR rates its motion bar at one to six weeks per charge in motion mode, and EZVALO rates its puck at about five hours at full brightness. The pack also ages, and when it dies the light usually goes with it.
With disposable cells, follow Energizer's battery care advice: replace all the cells in a light at once, don't mix old and new or different brands, and take batteries out of a light you won't use for a while, because spent cells can leak.
Mounting And Safety
Adhesive pads hold best on a smooth, clean, dry surface. Wipe the spot with rubbing alcohol, press the pad for half a minute and wait before loading the light. Pads tend to fail on textured paint, greasy cabinets and anything near stove heat; use screws there when the light comes with them. Magnetic mounts need steel or the included metal plate.
Coin cells, the flat batteries in most fairy lights, can cause severe internal burns if a child swallows one. Under Reese's Law, the Consumer Product Safety Commission now requires a battery compartment that needs a tool or two separate motions to open, plus warning labels. The agency recalled LED strip lights sold on AliExpress in 2025 because children could reach the coin cells. Check for a screw-shut box before buying.
For lights with built-in batteries, charge them from a known-brand USB charger, not under bedding, and stop using any light that swells, smells or gets hot. These lights are not emergency or code-required stair lighting, and most are for indoor use only.
