The 6 Best Fruit Carving Kits
This wiki has been updated 17 times since it was first published in April of 2020. The art of fruit and vegetable carving might seem intimidating, but it's actually easier than it looks, as long as you have the right tools, of course. These sets help you turn ordinary produce into a work of art, so you can create an elaborate watermelon sculpture to celebrate a special occasion, or simply add a little bit of pizzazz to your family’s meals with a radish rose garnish. June 12, 2020:
Fruit carving is often intimidating to newbies, but most will find that with a little practice, it starts to come easier than they expect. That being said, if you try and turn an ordinary old apple into a beautiful swan or a watermelon into an artistic sculpture worthy of an Instagram photo with any old kitchen knife set, you will, no doubt, struggle.
If this is your first foray into the practice, you'll probably want an affordable set that still includes a wide variety of tools, such as the YaeTek 18-Piece Culinary Set or K Kwokker Professional. Though it isn't super durable, the former is probably the better choice if your interest is solely in working with produce. On the other hand, if you think you might want to work with other mediums, such as pottery, the K Kwokker Professional might serve you better. It could even stand up to some light wood carving, though you should look to dedicated set for that if you plan on working with any hardwood species or if you plan to do it more than a couple of times, since you could easily wind up breaking one of the tools in the K Kwokker Professional if you put too much force into it or hit a knot.
For the experienced users and professional chefs who do a lot fruit carving, we recommend a higher-quality set like the Mercer 9-Piece M15990 and Kom Kom Deluxe, as these can both stand up to heavy use. They also both include enough variety in tools that you should be able to perform almost any kind of cut you need, no matter how delicate it may be. We will admit though, the Mercer 9-Piece M15990 is missing a wavy cutter, of which the Kom Kom Deluxe includes two. That being said, we prefer it for the polypropylene handles because they won't absorb liquids or rot or mold over time, which wood has the potential to do, especially if not cared for correctly.
