The 9 Best Flannel Sheets

Updated by Ezvid Wiki Admin · How we research

The top 5 flannel sheets: Eddie Bauer Deer Hollow, Bare Home Double-Brushed, Pointehaven Heavy Weight, Laura Ashley Audrey and Mellanni 4-Piece

Fabric weight, brushing, pocket depth and pilling decide how flannel sheets feel. We compared nine sets, and the Eddie Bauer Deer Hollow came out on top. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Flannel warmth comes from weight, not thread count: makers measure it in grams per square meter, and about 170 is heavy while about 135 sleeps cool. Every cotton flannel sheds some lint early and shrinks a little in the first wash. These sets suit cold bedrooms and winter guests; people who sleep hot are usually happier in percale.

Editor's Notes

October 27, 2026, by Ezvid Wiki Admin:

The Eddie Bauer Deer Hollow is our new favorite. GearLab's side-by-side flannel comparison made the brand's flannel its top choice and saw little pilling, and the line comes in dozens of prints. The Bare Home Double-Brushed, Sleep Foundation's top-rated set, follows closely as the pick in a plain solid color.

Both Pinzon sets, the Pinzon Signature and the Pinzon 160 Gram, are no longer available. We also dropped the Thermee Micro Shavel Home, Great Bay Home Nordic Collection, Royal Hotel Heavy Soft and Home Fashion Designs Stratton, because we could no longer find them for sale. The Pointehaven Heavy Weight, Laura Ashley Audrey and Mellanni 4-Piece stay.

New picks cover a tight budget, plaid, very tall mattresses and certified organic cotton. The weight of each fabric in grams per square meter, and what owners say about shrinking and pilling after a few washes, did most of the sorting.

October 01, 2019:

A sturdy, comfortable set of bed sheets is important for getting a good night’s rest, and a high-quality flannel set sure can come in handy during cold weather or when you’re camping. The selections featured here are all made from 100% cotton, which is warm and is known for holding up well in the wash. They’re also featured in an array of solid colors and fun prints, so you’re sure to find the right set for a kid’s room, a guest room, or your own bed.

Laura Ashley is a brand known for its floral prints and other elegant designs, all in soothing pastels. This line of flannel sheets is a new addition to our list, and you can choose from prints with delicate blooms and neutral plaid patterns. They’re created using a multi-level brushing process that ensures a cozy, supple texture. They’ve been preshrunk, so they shouldn’t get smaller when you wash them; nor will they fade in the laundry. In all, they’re a good value for the price, with many of the prints going for around $35.

The Pinzon Signature retains its top spot in this update, as these sheets boast a strong, yet durable, construction. This Portuguese-made selection have a soft, velvety feel, thanks to their double-napped finish on both sides.

Leaving the list in this update is the Threshold Flannel set, which is no longer available at this time.

Special Honors

L.L.Bean Ultrasoft Comfort Flannel Sheet Set L.L.Bean sells its Portuguese-made cotton flannel only through its own stores and site. Wirecutter has long named it the best flannel sheet set, and the Sleep Foundation rates it its softest pick. It costs much more than the sets on this list. llbean.com

Weight, Brushing And Pocket Depth

Double-brushed flannel is napped on both sides, so it feels soft whichever way the sheet lands.

Thread count matters little with flannel. What tells you how warm a set will be is its weight in grams per square meter (GSM). The Sleep Foundation puts lightweight flannel around 135 GSM, which sleeps cooler, and heavier flannel around 170 GSM, which is warmer and tends to last longer. The Pointehaven Heavy Weight sits at 170 GSM, while the Sleep Philosophy Cozy and the Ruvanti Rustic Homestead are 160 GSM. Not every maker publishes a weight: the Eddie Bauer and Lane Linen sets don't.

Brushing, or napping, is what raises the fuzzy surface that traps warm air. Double-brushed flannel is napped on both sides, so it feels soft whichever way the sheet lands. GearLab's flannel comparison found that the plushest sets also cling the most to pajamas, a trade-off worth knowing.

Check the pocket depth against your mattress plus any topper. Most queen sets here fit mattresses about 15 to 16 inches deep, the Laura Ashley Audrey up to 17 and the Ruvanti up to 18, but the Sleep Philosophy only 14. Cotton flannel shrinks in the first wash, so a set that fits snugly out of the package may end up tight. Bare Home cuts its sets large on purpose for that reason.

Cotton, Organic Or Microfleece

Every pick on this list is cotton. Cotton breathes and absorbs sweat, and it softens as it's washed. Sheets sold as polyester or microfiber "flannel" are really fleece: warm and cheap, but less breathable, and they can feel clammy on a mild night.

Two labels are worth checking. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means the finished fabric was tested for a long list of harmful substances. It says nothing about how the cotton was grown. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) covers organic fiber and the processing and dyeing behind it, which is what the Bare Home Organic carries. Some sellers say only that their sheets come from an Oeko-Tex certified factory, a looser claim than a certified fabric. You can look up a label number on the certifier's site.

Flannel is a cold-weather fabric. If you sleep hot, the Sleep Foundation suggests percale or linen instead; a lightweight flannel such as the Mellanni 4-Piece is a middle ground for a cool room.

Washing Flannel Without Wrecking It

New flannel sheds lint. That's loose fiber from the brushing, and it settles after a few washes. Sleep Philosophy and Comfort Spaces both suggest adding half a cup of white vinegar to the first wash. Wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle, skip bleach and fabric softener, and tumble dry on low. Softener coats the fibers and flattens the nap.

Pilling is the common complaint. Small balls of fiber form where you move the most: at the feet and on the fitted sheet's corners. Bare Home warns about it on its own page, and The Company Store's flannel guide recommends heavier, tightly woven flannel for longer wear. Washing inside a lightly loaded machine and not overloading the dryer cut down on friction.

Take sheets out of the dryer while they're still slightly warm and fold or put them straight on the bed. Flannel wrinkles if it sits, and overdrying adds static and wear.

How we researched this

We compared 15 flannel sheet sets, read the makers' fabric weights, care instructions and certification claims for the 9 finalists, drew on GearLab's side-by-side flannel comparison and the Sleep Foundation's ratings, analyzed owner feedback on shrinking, pilling and fit, and checked every brand against U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall records. None of the brands had a bedding recall.

Frequently asked questions

Is GSM or thread count better for judging flannel?

GSM. Flannel is a brushed fabric, so thread count says little. Around 135 GSM is light, 160 is midweight and 170 or more is heavy and warm.

Do flannel sheets pill?

Most do a little, mostly at the feet and the fitted sheet's corners. Heavier, tightly woven flannel, cool washes and low dryer heat slow it down.

Do flannel sheets shrink?

Cotton flannel shrinks in the first wash unless it's pre-shrunk, and even then a little. Pick a pocket depth a bit deeper than your mattress, and wash before first use.

Are flannel sheets too hot for summer?

For most people, yes. They're made to hold heat. Hot sleepers usually do better with percale or linen, and a lightweight flannel works for a cool bedroom.

What's the difference between Oeko-Tex and GOTS?

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished fabric for harmful substances. GOTS certifies organic fiber and how it was processed and dyed. A set can carry one, both or neither.
