Crossword dictionaries have barely changed since our 2020 update: the big American titles stopped getting new editions years ago, so this update was more about prices, availability and plain honesty about edition dates. Merriam-Webster's Crossword Puzzle Dictionary stays on top. Its fourth edition is still the most recent of the American clue-to-answer books, and it costs about what a sandwich does. The Million Word Crossword Dictionary stays as the big desk reference, though its paperback has gotten expensive. The Chambers Crossword Dictionary is now in its fourth edition and remains the pick for cryptic solvers. New American Crossword Puzzle Dictionary, The New Comprehensive A-Z Crossword Dictionary and The Beginner's Crossword Dictionary stay as well.
We added Webster's New World Crossword Puzzle Dictionary as a mid-size option and an enlarged-print Merriam-Webster for anyone tired of squinting. We dropped The Crossword Puzzler's Handbook, which is a primer rather than a dictionary, two titles that were down to their last copies at steep prices, an outdated Webster's New Explorer edition and a 1995 dictionary that now costs far more than newer ones.

Even with the advent of technology, old-fashioned wordplay teasers like crossword puzzles and scrabble have never been more popular. They offer a challenge that makes for a surprisingly soothing pastime, but since not everyone has an entire lexicon of common and obscure phrases, non-English terms, and current events in their heads, a crossword dictionary is of vital importance if you regularly complete these puzzles. They're especially helpful if you're trying to stay away from electronic devices for a while and don't want to jump on a computer for help.
For today's update, we sadly said goodbye to the New York Times Third Edition, as it is too outdated to keep around. While we kept some dated editions like Crossword Puzzle Dictionary 6th Edition and New Comprehensive A-Z Crossword Dictionary, The Times' dictionary still feels antiquated, despite being revised three times since its original 1974 publication. This removal brought our list to around seven entries, and so we took the opportunity to bring a few new selections into the fold.
We added The Beginner's Crossword Dictionary to help newbies get going in this meditative, stimulating hobby, and the breezy The Crossword Puzzler's Handbook for seasoned enthusiasts to round out their arsenal with a book that supplies very obscure entries. Finally, we brought on The Chambers Crossword Dictionary, a very comprehensive and thorough edition. It features contributions and guidance from several experts. Just be aware that it uses British spelling, which makes it less helpful for American crosswords in some instances. It's quite handy for solving cryptics, which are especially popular in the UK.

How The Books Are Arranged
Crossword dictionaries use two main layouts. The common American one is a clue-word index: you look up a word from the clue, and the candidate answers under it are grouped by number of letters. Merriam-Webster arranges its book alphabetically, by number of letters and by common categories (Merriam-Webster). Webster's New World also breaks its 300,000 entries down by letter count and adds reference tables, such as Shakespeare's characters and the books of the Bible.
The other layout is a big list of answers sorted by length and then alphabetically, the way Chambers is built. That works well when you know how many squares you have and a few letters, but less well when all you have is the clue.
Some books add a category section, with answers grouped by subject, which helps with clues like "Italian river" where a synonym list won't. Either way, a print dictionary gives you candidates, not answers. The crossing letters still decide which one fits.
Edition Age, Print Size And Free Solvers
Check the edition year before you buy. The most recent major American edition here is Merriam-Webster's fourth, from 2015; The Million Word Crossword Dictionary was last revised around 2011, when it added slang, brand names and celebrity names. Several popular dictionaries date to the mid-1990s, which means a generation of new names and phrases is missing. No print dictionary will have last year's pop culture, so expect to fill those clues from the crossings.
Size matters too. Mass-market pocket books, about 4 by 6 3/4 inches, pack more than 1,000 pages into a thick block with small type (Merriam-Webster). Trade paperbacks and enlarged-print editions are easier to read at a table but heavier to carry.
