This wiki has been updated 26 times since it was first published in October of 2016. An alternative to slower, more expensive and less efficient twist drills and hole saws, these annular cutter sets offer a faster, easier and more accurate way of making holes in a wide variety of metal than conventional bits. They also tend to produce less wastage, meaning money saved on materials. We've included options for accommodating both industrial and consumer needs. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

September 05, 2019:

We've given this list a major refresh in our last update, dropping a few items that are no longer on the market and adding numerous sets from reputable manufacturers.

The top dog on the list, the Accusize Industrial Tools N10, is one of those newcomers. Its mid-tier price is justifiable because of the high quality of the drill bits and the well-made, nice-looking case.

An annular cutter set paired with a magnetic drill will shave a load of time off the tedious, often repetitive task of boring holes through metal. For those who work on deadline or have a limited amount of time to spend in the shop, switching over to these cutters from slower, more cumbersome tools is a wise move.

The standard annular cutter is made from high-speed steel and is capable of drilling through most of the material you are likely to come across. You are also able to resharpen them using a grinder.

However, in situations where you need to put a hole in harder or more abrasive material, consider the Bluerock 6 Piece TCT set, which has bits with tungsten carbide tips. Because the tips are a separate component, usually glued onto the bit, they are more prone to breakage and their use is not recommended on more routine, softer material.

Not only are these annular cutters sharp and designed to spin at a high RPM, but the metal ribbons of waste they produce can also be very sharp. Please observe all safety precautions when using them.
