Owner reports land close to the 5-hour rating of our top pick, the Made for Amazon Dot Base, which Mission builds for fourth- and fifth-generation Echo Dots. The old list, built around Echo speakers from 2016 to 2019, had mostly aged out. The Mission MC46B and GGMM D3+ are no longer available, the Ion Smart Tailgater is really a party speaker, and the Nomodo Speaker Dock, Cyber Acoustics dot.Boom, Ninety7 Sky Tote and Caramote Portable didn't turn up among current listings at all.
The Mission Base for the fourth-generation Echo stays, along with the Fremo Evo Plus for second-generation Dot owners. New picks cover the speakers people own now: the Dot from the fourth and fifth generations, the Echo Pop and the 2023 Echo Show 5, plus a base for the third-generation Dot.
Two things surprised us. We found no lab tests of any current Echo battery base, so runtimes here are makers' claims, set against owner reports where they exist. And no base we found fits the Echo Studio, the Echo Dot Max or the bigger Echo Show models.

Amazon's Alexa is an amazing device, and once you own one, you'll wonder how you ever made due without it. That being said, it has one notable flaw, the need to be constantly connected to a power source. The battery bases on this list allow you to take your standard Echo or the Dot anywhere you want, without being tethered to a wall. Though they are currently selling 4th generation models, we realize many people are still using older ones, which is why you'll find options for every generation and model here, including the Plus.
If you want something to enhance the sound of your Echo, you should look to one with an integrated speaker, like the Nomodo Speaker Dock, Ion Smart Tailgater, and Cyber Acoustics dot.Boom. However if portability is your top priority, you'll be best served with something compact, like the Mission MC46B, GGMM D3+, or Caramote Portable.

Match The Base To Your Exact Echo
The fourth and fifth generations are small spheres, and they share one base.
A battery base is shaped for one speaker, so "for Echo" on a box isn't enough. Check the generation first. The third-generation Echo Dot is a fabric-covered puck. The fourth and fifth generations are small spheres, and they share one base. The full-size fourth-generation Echo is a bigger sphere with its own base. The Echo Pop is a half dome with a flat face, and the Echo Show 5 from 2023 is the third generation of that screen. Mission, which builds the licensed bases, lists the fit for each one: its Dot base page covers the Dot 4 and 5 only, and its Echo Pop launch post says that base won't work with a Pop in a case.
Some Echo speakers have no base at all. We found none for the Echo Studio, the Echo Dot Max or the Echo Show 8, 10 and 15 that met our standards, and those speakers run on wall power only. Bases for the first and second generation Echo and the Dot 3 from GGMM and Mission are no longer sold new, so owners of those speakers have few choices left.
A base also doesn't add anything the speaker lacks. Alexa still needs Wi-Fi, so away from home you'll need a phone hotspot, and the speaker is no more water resistant on a base than off it.
Runtime Claims And What Drains The Battery
Makers' runtime figures on this list run from 4 hours to 11 hours, and they aren't measured the same way. Mission gives one number per base: up to 5 hours for its Dot and Echo bases, 6 or 7 for the Pop depending on the source, and 4 for the Show 5, whose screen draws extra power. Third-party makers claim 5,000 to 5,200 mAh and 6 to 11 hours, and only PlusAcc says what volume its figure assumes.
Volume matters most. The only independent measurement we found is TechTwo's review of the GGMM D5, a Dot base that's no longer sold. The reviewer got more than 11 hours at a low volume setting, against GGMM's claim of 7 hours at half volume. On Mission's Dot base, owners posting on Best Buy's review page commonly report four and a half to five hours, close to the claim.
Standby drains a base too. An Echo stays on and listens for its wake word even when it's quiet, so a base left on overnight can be flat by morning. Several makers, including Liboer and Fremo, tell owners to hold the button to switch the base off, or to unplug the speaker, when it's not in use.
Charging, Care And Lithium-Ion Safety
Most bases recharge through the Echo's own power adapter: you plug it into the base instead of the speaker, and the speaker keeps playing while the base charges. None of the licensed bases comes with a charger, and Fremo asks owners to use the plug and cable that came with the Dot. A few third-party bases also take a USB-C cable, and the PlusAcc E02-A adds a USB-C output for a phone.
Every base here holds a lithium-ion battery, the same kind found in a power bank. We checked each brand against the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall list and found no recall of an Echo battery base. Power-bank recalls are common, though, so stop using any base that swells, gets unusually hot or smells, and don't charge one on a bed or sofa.
If you fly with one, treat it like a spare battery. The TSA says power banks go in carry-on bags only, and the FAA allows lithium-ion batteries of up to 100 watt-hours without airline approval. The third-party bases here claim 5,000 to 5,200 mAh, or roughly 18 to 19 watt-hours, well under that limit.

We compared 19 battery bases for Echo speakers, including every base we could find for the Echo Dot, Echo, Echo Pop, Echo Show and older Dot models. We read makers' listings, product pages and fit charts, the one independent review we found, and owner feedback, and we checked every brand for recalls with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. We found no lab tests of current Echo battery bases, so runtimes are makers' claims.
