Still, a warm wipe may keep a sleepy newborn calmer at 3 a.m. The catches are drying, browning and cords, so this list is for parents who decide the comfort is worth it.

Many a new parent dreads diaper changes, as they often result in a screaming and shivering baby. These handy wipe warmers can come to the rescue, as they'll help you clean your infant without the jolt of an uncomfortable, cold wipe. They’re especially useful for late-night diaper changes, since your baby won’t be jarred wide awake by an icy cold sensation. Speaking of which, some models, like the Munchkin Warm Glow and the Hiccapop Dispenser, even come with soft nightlights that help ensure you see what you’re doing without having to subject your baby to any bright overhead lights.
Today we added a third model from Prince Lionheart that’s designed to be used with reusable wipes. No matter which model you decide upon, be sure to keep it unplugged when it’s not in use, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, including when and how to add water. To ensure babies’ safety, always change them on a stable, flat surface, and never leave them unattended on a changing table, even for a moment.

If you do buy one, know the history. In 2000 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of about 152,000 Prince Lionheart warmers whose tubs could crack and let water reach the wiring, after four reports of shocks (CPSC). About 536,000 Dex warmers were recalled in 1997 because they could overheat and melt (CPSC), and Cosco and Safety 1st recalled warmers in 2001 (CPSC). We found no wipe-warmer recall since then for any brand on this page.
A few habits cut the risk. Look for a UL or ETL mark on the power adapter. A detachable cord is better, because a damaged fixed cord retires the whole warmer (Mommyhood101). Set it on a flat, stable surface, keep the cord well away from the crib and out of the baby's reach, and never warm anything but wet wipes in it. Unplug it if it will sit unused for a day or more.
Top Heat, A Damp Pillow Or Heat All Around
How a warmer heats decides how fast your wipes dry and brown. Most models now heat from the lid down, so the wipe you pull next is the warmest one and the stack below is spared constant baking. In a week-long trial, a top-heated Hiccapop kept a short stack wet, while the Munchkin Warm Glow's wipes dried out as the stack shrank and needed a full pack or a splash of water (Mommyhood101).
Prince Lionheart warms from below and puts a damp pillow under the stack to keep it moist. That works, but the pillow needs a rinse each week and a fresh one every few months. A few newer models, such as the Chefhandy, wrap heat around the sides, and warmers like the Momcozy and Bellababy take a whole sealed pack, which is tidier but slow: a sealed pack can take a couple of hours to warm (Babylist).
Expect to wait. Loose wipes in a top-heated model warm in roughly half an hour to an hour, and a full stack can take most of a day to warm through. A silicone seal in the lid, a viewing window and a night light that shuts itself off are the features that matter at 3 a.m. Adjustable heat is a bonus, not a need.
Which Wipes Fit, And How To Keep It Clean
Most warmers take any brand of continuous-feed baby wipes, where pulling one sheet brings up the next. Bulk value packs and oversize packs may not fit compact models, and a thin wipe can tear or come out two at a time in some lids (Babylist). Thicker wipes hold up better to warmth; our best baby wipes list compares them. Reusable cloth wipes need a warmer built for them, such as Prince Lionheart's Warmies.
A warm, closed, damp box can grow mold if it's neglected. No study has tied warmers to infections, but the fix is simple: empty any standing water, wipe the inside clean and let it dry fully between refills, and don't overfill, which leads to browning and strains the hinge (Mommyhood101). Momcozy asks for a weekly wipe-down, and Prince Lionheart wants its pillow rinsed weekly (Prince Lionheart).
Throw out wipes that turn brown, smell musty or feel dry. Brown edges come from heat on the fibers and lotion, not dirt, but they mean the stack has sat too long. Buying smaller packs and refilling more often keeps the supply fresh.
