The 6 Best Winch Mounts
This wiki has been updated 18 times since it was first published in August of 2019. Most off-road enthusiasts will agree that a winch is an essential accessory for your truck or ATV, but if you want to add one to your ride, you're going to need a solid bracket on which to mount it. While model-specific options are common in this category, our rankings are focused on transferable options that can attach to standard receiver hitches, and some widely-compatible permanent choices. It only takes about one time stuck in the mud to come to the conclusion that a good winch is a must-have accessory to outfit your truck or ATV with. But nothing comes simply in this life, so once you purchase that winch, you’re going to need to go ahead and find an appropriate mount, which is essentially a bracket used to attach the machine to your ride. While there’s plenty of vehicle-specific options to consider within this category, there also fairly universal models, and even portable options – which are great if you’ve got more than one toy that could use a winch.
Portable options are also great for users who use their winches infrequently, who find their constant presence, hanging off their bumpers, to be a nuisance or eyesore. Permanent options are recommended for installation on designated off-road vehicles, and have the advantage of being more difficult to steal. (Although the Offroading Gear Portable Cradle does come with its own hitch lock).
Before making any purchases in this category, double check to make sure that item your eyeing is compatible with winch you’re installing: is it rated to carry a winch as big as yours? Does it have the same bolt pattern?
Good! Now all you might need is a matching spare tire mount and possibly a bead seating tool and you’re ready to hit the backcountry.
