Editor's Notes

January 17, 2021:

Chargers are a somewhat fast-moving category, as the underlying technology is often being improved upon to make them quicker and more efficient. As such, our entire lineup of recommendations was replaced with new models during this update. Perhaps one of the most notable changes from our previous selections is that nearly every model now offers wireless charging. The Panergy F10, MyCharge Adventure Turbo, and BigBlue Portable are exceptions to this, but we still felt they warranted a place for various reasons. Regarding the Panergy F10, we appreciated its large 60-LED panel that provides more illumination than other models, while the MyCharge Adventure Turbo was included because it is one of the few that is IP67 rated, so it can withstand periods of total immersion, rather than splashes or a bit of rain like most others. The BigBlue Portable stands apart from all the rest as it doesn't contain its own battery, and instead offers large, powerful solar panels for direct charging when the sun is shining. It is also the only one that has a DC output.

July 31, 2019:

We wanted to make sure we included a combination of premium high-capacity models, as well as budget-friendly options to ensure there is one to suit every need. If you expect that you may be away from a power source for more than a couple of days, your best option is to go with a waterproof charger that has an integrated solar panel, like the EasyAcc TP20000-BG, Nexgadget Solar, Soaraise 25000mAh, and Kiizon Powerbank. Of these, the Soaraise 25000mAh has the most solar panels and will recharge itself the quickest in sunlight, but the downside of this is a bulkier build. The EasyAcc TP20000-BG landed our top spot because it combines a high capacity with an extremely rugged build and quick-charging capabilities.

If you don't think you need the ability to recharge your powerbank via the sun, then you can opt for a truly waterproof model that can actually withstand being fully submerged, such as the FosPower PowerActive, which also happens to be rather budget friendly, the Dark Energy Poseidon, and the Jarv Tank. Of these three, the Dark Energy Poseidon has the highest waterproof rating, though it is very pricey for a powerbank with just a 10,000mah capacity.

Speaking of capacity, some have a larger need than others. If you are only using the powerbank to recharge your phone and expect to be near an outlet every night or every other day, something with a 10,000mah capacity will probably be enough for you. However, if you want to be able to recharge both your tablet and smartphone a couple of times without running out of juice on your powerbank, it is best to look for a model with a 20,000mah or higher capacity, such as the EasyAcc TP20000-BG, Luxtude EP-200, Nexgadget Solar, Soaraise 25000mAh, Kiizon Powerbank, and Outxe 20000mAh.
