It's a motorized box that turns an automatic while it's off your wrist, so it keeps running with the time and date set. Owners of several automatics use them most, ideally with a box whose turns per day match the watch maker's spec.

First place goes to a newcomer, the SONGMICS UJWB030B01, a cheap single with a lock. Most of the 2021 list had drifted. The Belocia BEL-3E and Teeming WW-8224 are unavailable, and their listings now show different models. The Jins & Vico Piano Finish listing now sells an eight-watch box with a weak owner record, and the Mineesi LLS-01 was replaced by a model we liked less. We couldn't confirm current product data for the Wolf Roadster Triple Black, the Swiss Kubik Master Collection or the Rapport London Perpetua III, so they're out too.
The Versa G015, the old Versa Automatic Double, stays, and it's a different machine now. An earlier note dropped it over its magnetic door, and the redesign closes without magnets. The Wolf Heritage 270002 and the Triple Tree HE-1 stay as well. The other new picks go up to the Heiden Nova Quad for collectors who want to set turns per day for each watch.
We found no lab tests of watch winders. The evidence is makers' turns-per-day and motor specs where they publish them, watch retailers' winding guides, owner reports on noise and motors that quit, and recall checks. And a reminder: a winder is a convenience, not a necessity. A stopped automatic is fine once you set it again.

We realize that not everyone has extremely expensive timepieces, and nobody wants to spend more on their winder than they did on the watch itself, so we made it a priority to add a couple of affordable options during this update. One of these is the Tripletree Single. While it comes in a few finishes, we think the faux leather with contrast stitching is the most attractive, however, if you prefer something a bit more discreet, you can choose the piano black or wood grain options. Though it doesn't offer a lot of customizability, it should be more than suitable for the average person who just needs to keep a single watch wound.
Another budget-friendly model we added is the Versa Automatic Double, which takes the place of the Versa Automatic Single. As the name implies, the former holds two watches instead of one, yet it doesn't take up any more counter space than a single timepiece holder. We will admit it doesn't have the best aesthetic and probably wouldn't be suitable for someone with an expensive collection who wants a very elegant storage solution. If this sounds like you, we recommend looking to the Wolf Roadster Triple Black if you have multiple watches, or the Rapport London Perpetua III, Swiss Kubik Master Collection, and Wolf Heritage 270002 if you just have a single piece. All four of these are premium winders that are sure to impress and offer a wide variety of settings.
The final affordable option we added during this update is the Mineesi LLS-01, which is a simple model that can accommodate men's women's watches on its soft pillow. As with the Tripletree Single, it doesn't offer a ton of settings, just five in fact, but we like that it can be set to automatically stop when the lid is opened and that it holds timepieces at an upward angle for easy viewing from above.

Automatic watches require a delicate balance between winding and resting. Each one is essentially designed to be worn throughout a given day and rested at night, as though it were the only piece in a person's collection. When you own more than one watch, that can get a little more complicated. Keeping your whole collection ticking can have a lot of advantages for the components inside, but overwinding a watch could be even more damaging than letting it stop every now and again.
The best middle ground is a winder that can be programmed to move your watch in a similar pattern it would experience when worn daily on a wrist. The only problem is that different watches have different lengths of mainspring and different abilities when it comes to conserving that spring's energy, resulting in what's commonly referred to as a watch's power reserve.
Because of those differences, we looked for winders that had as much nuance as possible in their rotation patterns, with the ability to rotate in clockwise, counterclockwise, and bi-directional patterns being particularly important depending on the rotor design of a given watch. Both the Wolf Roadster Triple Black and the Rapport London Perpetua III offer a lot of functionality here, with reliable brand names to back them up. We did remove the Wold Heritage Double that had been included on our previous list, however, but that was due to the superiority of some other two-watch cases, the Rapport among them. We also had to get rid of the Versa Double we had before, due to strong magnetic closures on its door that could throw off a fine watch's accuracy.

Most automatic watches need somewhere between about 500 and 950, and the right number depends on the movement.

Billstone's winding specification lists 500 TPD for several A. Lange & Söhne models and 800 for some Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks, and it suggests 650 in both directions for any watch it doesn't list.
Direction matters too. Some rotors wind only when they turn one way, and others wind both ways. Prestige Time puts the Rolex 3135 at 650 TPD in both directions and the Daytona's 4130 at 650 to 800. A watch retailer's Rolex TPD chart gives similar numbers but lists the 4130 as clockwise only, so sources don't fully agree. Rolex doesn't publish a winder table, so check the movement's manual or ask a dealer.
Winders with TPD presets, such as the Versa models at 650, 850, 1,050 and 1,250, let you match a number. Many budget boxes only list timed cycles. Those still keep most watches running, but they can turn a watch far more than it needs, which adds wear without any benefit.
Do You Need One, And Can It Hurt A Watch?
A full mainspring runs most automatic watches for about two days. A winder keeps the watch going past that, so the time, date and any moon phase or calendar stay set. That's a convenience, not a repair need. A stopped automatic isn't harmed, and Bob's Watches makes the same point about Rolex owners.
A winder can't overwind a modern automatic. The mainspring is attached by a slipping spring that lets go when it's full, as the Wikipedia entry on self-winding watches explains. The real costs are extra running time on the rotor, bearings and gears, and accuracy: a watch resting in one position on a winder may not keep the same time it does on the wrist, as Prestige Time notes. Programs with long rest periods help.
A winder doesn't help quartz watches, and Versa and Heiden both say their winders don't work with Seiko Kinetic. It also can't revive a dead watch well. Wind the crown 20 to 40 turns first, or wear the watch for a while, then put it in. If you worry about magnetism from a motor, check the watch afterward with a phone app that measures it.
Capacity, Fit And Power
Count your automatic watches, then think about the next one. Singles cost the least, doubles let you keep a daily wearer and a weekend watch running, and four-watch boxes start at about the price of a premium single. Boxes with a motor per watch, or a switch per head, let you stop slots you aren't using.
Check the fit before you buy. Pillows on the winders here take dials up to 52 to 56 millimeters, and some list strap circumferences, often about 6.5 to 8.7 inches. Heavy steel bracelets are the hard case: the Watch Winder Smith box rates each cradle for about 300 grams, and Prestige Time warns that big, top-heavy watches can tip light single winders.
Power is the other choice. Adapters suit a dresser. USB-C runs from a laptop or a phone charger. Battery winders go in a safe or a drawer with no cord: Heiden says two D cells last one to three months. Several makers warn not to run a winder on batteries and an adapter at the same time. Every motor makes some sound, so if you're a light sleeper, keep it out of the bedroom or pick one with long rests. We checked the brands on this list with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and found no watch winder recalls.
