Editor's Notes

February 24, 2021:

With the majority of our previous picks still presenting as great choices, it was a straightforward round of updates for us. The only real substantive change I made was removing the NagicToy Professional – a precision multi-driver with a versatile bit set – and replacing it with the Ares 44000 — a compact unit that folds up like a Swiss Army Knife and offers 10 sizes of star key.

There was some deliberation, trying to decide whether to include a ratcheting screwdriver with a Torx bit set, instead of the 44000. However, after some consideration, it was determined that this folding style was preferable. My thought process was as follows:

Options like the NagicToy Professional might be alright for a casual DIYer to leave around the garage, but for professionals who don’t come across Torx hardware often, but don’t want to be stuck when they do, who need a compact solution that has no trouble fitting inside their tool bag, kits like that are too bulky.

Granted, smaller options offering less versatility than the NagicToy were a possibility we could’ve explored, but it has been my experience that switching multi-driver bits tends to be a pain, and often seems to wind up with bits getting lost over time, especially with tools that see infrequent action.

I keep a pair of folding hex wrenches in my own tool backpack (one SAE and one metric) that have a virtually identical design to the 44000, and I’ve found them to be convenient and serviceable when they’re in use, and compact and unobtrusive for the other 99% of the time. All this goes to say that, if you’re looking for a just-in-case tool for occasional use, I think that the 44000 might be an alright choice.

February 27, 2019:

We looked at models from some of the most well-known and respected toolmakers, including Klein, Wiha, and Bondhus, and were sure to include at least one security option in the Tonsiki Security Head. We prioritized durability, high-quality materials, meticulous manufacturing, and ergonomics with all our choices, and added compelling budget options like the Craftsman 9-41404. We also incorporated an insulated set (the Wiha 32590) and repair kits (the Nanch Small and NagicToy Professional) to cater to various operating needs. The Wiha 26791 Precision and Klein 19555 took two of the top spots due to their quality workmanship and thoughtful designs.

Special Honors

King 100 Piece There's nothing wrong with picking up a few star drivers to fill in the gap in your collection, but if you're just starting to build your arsenal up from scratch, you might be better off thinking of a complete kit that can accommodate virtually any style of fastener. Some of these can get to be quite expensive, especially if they include nothing but individual drivers, but this hybrid set – which includes 15 popular drivers plus a big bit set and a multi-driver – is quite affordable. homedepot.com

Milwaukee 48-22-2103 It might not be as convenient and comfortable as a separate set of drivers, but for a compact solution offering 10 sizes, consider this multi-driver from Milwaukee. Its bits are chrome plated, and the tool is protected by a limited lifetime warranty. milwaukeetool.com
