Editor's Notes

December 03, 2020:

Unlike other noodle makers, spaetzle makers are simple tools that are relatively easy to use, clean, and store. We included every popular variety available in a range of price points, so those who make this savory dish often and anyone just looking to try their hand at it should find something they like.

We almost didn't keep the Harold Import Co. 1618 around due to a handful of complaints of its handle breaking. The way that it's connected makes it prone to coming off if it's abused, handled roughly, or dropped, but as long as you work quickly and don't put too much pressure on it you should be alright. Many people don't have this problem whatsoever. Its low price, ease of use, stainless steel body, and efficacy led us to keep it for the time being.

We did say goodbye to the Harcci NAF Imports and Muxel's Spätzlewunder, both of which became unavailable, and the Danesco Stainless Steel because it is extremely similar to the Zoie + Chloe Premium but lacks a comfort grip handle and is priced just a tad too high for what it is. We used the vacancies to add the Joseph Joseph Helix, a nifty potato ricer that can do double-duty for making spaetzle and uses the strength from your forearms and shoulders instead of just your wrist and hands, allowing you to do more without becoming too fatigued.

You'll also notice the Tupperware Spaetzleria joining the ranks today, a plastic option popular in Germany. It comes with a durable scraper that clicks into the back for storage and is well made, durable, and dishwasher safe. It shouldn't melt when placed over hot pot rims, and it won't get overly hot and cook your batter prematurely. Finally, we brought on the simplistic Upkoch Traditional, which has a large surface area and a stay-cool wooden handle. The holes on this one make for little bite-sized pieces, which some prefer.

A spaetzle maker is a highly practical kitchen gadget that’s great for those who love to make this savory, comforting dish yet don’t have the time to roll the noodles by hand. These soft egg noodles originated in southern Germany and Austria, and have also been popular in other European countries. They’re commonly enjoyed with applesauce or covered in a sauce made from butter, sugar, and a couple of spices. Our selection features handled models made to press out the dough into your pot, as well as those that grate the dough so that it falls into the pot.

Joining our selection in this update is the Muxel's Spätzlewunder, which fits on top of a pot and comes with a tool that enables you to push your dough right in. It’s similar in design to the Küchenprofi 18/10 on our list but, unlike that model, this one is made of plastic – which makes it more lightweight and likely easier to clean. It does come with instructions and a recipe, but alas, they’re written in German – which might not be a problem for many home cooks who make spaetzle, though. It can also serve as a strainer, and is thin enough to take up very little storage space in your cabinet.

Leaving the list is the Shu Franro, amid reports that the metal bends rather easily under pressure.

No matter which selection you choose, if you have little helpers, be sure to supervise them closely whenever they’re around a hot stove and sharp cooking tools.
