This wiki has been updated 21 times since it was first published in December of 2018. When someone enters or exits your house, you want to know right away, especially if you're not home and don't expect anyone else to be there, either. With one of these Wi-Fi door sensors, you'll get an immediate alert of any threshold breach, and be able to look through the day's activity. With the addition of a smart hub, other home sensors can be added and controlled through your mobile devices. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

December 29, 2020:

Technology and smart connectivity are pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and home security is certainly no exception. A smart door sensor can provide almost instant notifications of activity within your home no matter where you are in the world, and with the addition of a smart hub, these sensors can be part of an ecosystem of intelligent devices that monitor our safety.

In this update, we added several options that make use of our phones and Wi-Fi connection to provide various levels of functionality. The least complex are the Proteus DX and the Braumm Universal, the latter of which is the only one that can function without Wi-Fi, as it has a built-in siren. Both of these models can be set up to work with text messages and emails too, making them a good choice for the elderly.

We also included the iClever Contact, which doesn't need a hub but is instead controlled fully through an app, and the Yolink Home Security which is reasonably priced and comes with its own hub and four sensors. Finally, we added the Aeotec Multisensor 6, which also detects things like humidity, moisture, and temperature, but, like many others in this category, will only function in conjunction with a hub.

January 05, 2019:

The number-one consideration with these types of sensors is their ability to pair with your smart home system. If you already have a hub, you need one that pairs with it. If you use Alexa or Google Assistant, you'll want to be able to converse with it. But if you'd rather not get into that mess, you need a unit that can communicate with your smartphone without any extra equipment, and that's what sets the top items on the list apart.
