The 10 Best Saw Guides

This wiki has been updated 27 times since it was first published in March of 2017. If you can't seem to get clean, accurate cuts out of your new track or circular saw, then you need one of these guides, which are aluminum or steel rails that lie on or clamp to your workpiece and direct your tool to make straight lines without the need for measuring or marking. Our selections were made by considering factors such as price, ease of use, versatility, and effectiveness. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

December 03, 2020:

A saw guide is used to ensure a perfectly straight cut when using a range of power tools. Some are designed specifically for track saws or circular saws, while others are more versatile in nature and can be used with other cutting tools such as jigsaws and routers. Depending on the materials being cut, some guides are designed for longer lengths and are suitable for ripping down large sheet materials, and others are better for shorter lengths and angled cuts.

In this update to the ranking, we removed the DeWalt DWS5023 as it is limited in use to track saws, and others on the list, such as the Bora 544024 NGX can accomplish the same task. In its place, we selected the Evolution ST1400, which is compatible with most brands of power tools, can be extended by joining several together, and comes in a padded carrying case.

Both the Bora 543050 WTX and the Bora 543410 from the previous list have benefited from a new locking mechanism. Their replacements, the Bora 544024 NGX and the Bora 544500 NGX can now be easily clamped from one side, saving time when repositioning the guide for a series of cuts. The latter is a five-piece kit that has a maximum extension of 100 inches and includes two rolls of chip guard.

The Festool 491498 was replaced with the more versatile Festool 769942 FSK, which, although being slightly shorter, is specifically designed for making cross-cuts and angled cuts with a circular saw. Although it can be used with a range of cutting tools, when used with Festool's HK range of circular saws, it utilizes a clip-in connection system that holds the tool in place and has an automated self-retraction feature.

October 17, 2019:

Removed the Makita 194368-5 because it is restricted to track saws and there are more versatile saw guides available, such as the Woodriver 150006 and the Rockler Straight-Edge, which were both added.

The E. Emerson Tool Co. C50 takes the top spot because of its integrated clamps and its beefy cross-section. In this case, the thickness is a good thing because the saws ride on its edge. If they rode on top of it, the thickness would be a problem because of the depth loses to your saw. The Woodriver is another good option at a reasonable price. Since, it can be clamped to the opposite side of the workpiece, it is not limited to perpendicular cuts like those that clamp to edges.

Working with wood creates fine particles that are hazardous if inhaled for prolonged periods of time. Always use breathing protection to avoid health complications.

October 20, 2018:

Expanded list to include Bora 543500 Set, which should appeal to those looking for a comprehensive collection of saw cutting aids, as well as the DeWalt DWS5100, which should satisfy at-home handymen looking for a versatile tool to help with everyday jobs.

4. Rockler Straight-Edge

5. Kreg KMA2685 Rip-Cut

6. Evolution ST1400

7. DeWalt DWS5100

8. Festool 769942 FSK

9. Bora 544024 NGX

10. Milescraft 14000713
