This wiki has been updated 26 times since it was first published in May of 2018. Does your job require you to go into and out of locked premises several times throughout the day? If so, a retractable keychain may provide a level of convenience that beats having to rummage around in your pocket or purse every time. We've selected a diverse range of options to suit all kinds of needs, including some that can also accommodate IDs, flashlights, and other accessories. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

March 04, 2021:

We added two new items for our latest update. These are the ELV 2-Pack, which represent excellent value, and are ideal for those who work in jobs like property management, security, or construction, where you might be required to wear an ID at all times and need multiple keys for access on a regular basis. They are strong enough to support small tools as well, so you will always have the essential devices at hand.

We also included the Specialist ID Heavy Duty. This, as the name suggests, is well suited to demanding tasks, and has a Kevlar cord, which adds to its durability. Anyone who uses their keys often in a working environment would benefit from one of these, as its retracting mechanism locks when fully extended, enabling you to freely maneuver your keys into position, without being bothered by spring tension.

October 07, 2019:

We've kept a range of options at this time, covering those that hold both keys and IDs as well as those with clips for your belt or pocket and carabiners for everywhere else. But it remains tough to beat options from top name Key-Bak, and we've included their Super 48 and Original. The Super is the model for those who expect to carry a lot of weight, while the Original is a lighter duty choice. The Naturebelle Badge Reel is a fine alternative, especially since it comes in a 10-pack that's great for those who are rough on their stuff.

We also decided to add two options that are a little different, the Youowo Lanyard Reel Set and the Nite Ize SlideLock KeyRack. The former includes a lanyard for neck wear and offers a handy ID holder, although this isn't as waterproof as the company claims. The latter isn't actually retractable, but it's a popular alternative as it keeps keys safe and accessible. The locking mechanism it uses is almost too good, though, as it can take a couple of tries to get it open.
