Editor's Notes

May 01, 2020:

Considering the Nintendo Switch feels like it was designed to host puzzle games, there actually weren’t a whole lot to choose from for this list. While a lot of platformer and stealth games incorporate some amount of puzzle-solving mechanics into their overall content, I wanted to stick to games that exclusively offer puzzles. Thus, we’ve ended up with a solid collection of experiences that should satisfy one’s itch to solve brain teasers for a good chunk of time.

I put Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker at the top of this list because it feels like the most complete puzzle game for the Switch. Developed in-house as part of Nintendo’s flagship Super Mario universe, it features a fan-favorite character in Toad, alongside a recognizable supporting cast. The game also doesn’t feel like a traditional puzzler in the sense that it takes advantage of 3D environments and the ability for your character to move freely. Levels don’t feel overwhelming, but contain a ton of collectibles and little secret areas to keep players engaged.

I’d also like to point out that Snipperclips Plus is much more enjoyable when played with others. This usually means docking the switch and playing on a large screen. While the game does offer a single-player mode, most of its levels were designed to be tackled by multiple people. The game is widely considered one of the best co-op titles for the Switch too, so I didn’t want to drop it too far down on our list just because it’s not great when played solo.

4. Layton’s Mystery Journey: Deluxe Edition

5. Tetris 99

6. Mahjong Deluxe 3

7. Candle: The Power of Flame

8. Soldam: Drop, Connect, Erase
