Editor's Notes
September 03, 2020:
Pocket flashlights seem simple, but features can vary widely from model to model, whether that's type of battery, throw distance, clip size, memory function, and more. Most of the best models these days are rechargeable, have a well-designed clip that won't catch on your clothing, and blend toughness with a low weight thanks to up-to-date materials. And when it comes to such criteria, Streamlight flashlights are hard to beat, especially the Streamlight Microstream USB. Despite a lower cost than some similar choices, it performs well in day-to-day situations, with a push-button tail switch that is uncomplicated and user-friendly.
As for other well-known names, we've kept the Maglite Solitaire 1-Cell, which is affordable and lightweight, and replaced the Fenix PD25 with the Fenix PD35 V2.0. This upgraded version has a sturdy metal switch complemented by a rose gold ring, a combination that ensures it is robust and feels good in the hand. We also removed the ThruNite Archer 2A V3 in favor of the ThruNite T1 over issues with availability. The T1 has both memory and locking functions, but the turbo mode can be disappointing; unless the battery is completely charged, the performance is underwhelming. But this is a minor drawback, and we appreciate that it's quite bright given the diminutive size. For another very small option, we selected the Olight i1R 2 EOS. It's rechargeable, and, conveniently, you don't have to take it apart when it's time to top it up.

Looked at Streamlight models, adding the Microstream for its price-to-quality ratio but omitting the popular Stylus Pro due to ongoing issues with its on-off tail switch. Selected the SOG Dark Energy 750A as a viable option for those looking for something exceptionally high-end and the ThruNite Archer 2A V3 despite some occasional durability woes.
Special Honors
Streamlight Macrostream The Streamlight Macrostream bills itself as an everyday carry flashlight, and at a mere 2.2 ounces, it surely won't weigh you down, no matter where your daily travels take you. It features a robust aluminum housing that is abrasion-resistant, as well as a clip that keeps it safely in your pocket or on the bill of a ball cap. streamlight.com
ePromos Mini Aluminum Although they aren't as fancy as some popular models, these ePromos Mini Aluminum can be customized to include a business name, and they come in three colors: black, blue, or red. They're complete with a handy keychain clip, and their per-unit price is quite affordable, but you should be prepared to purchase in bulk. epromos.com
