The 10 Best Pillow Top Mattresses
This wiki has been updated 19 times since it was first published in September of 2020. Modern mattresses come in many varieties, but if you enjoy the sensation of lying on soft, fluffy cushioning, you may want to consider a pillow top. Memory foam, coil, and hybrid models all offer varying levels of support, and there are pillow top versions of each of these types, which means you don't have to forego a plush surface just because you also like a firm foundation. When users buy our independently chosen editorial recommendations, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.
Editor's Notes
September 17, 2020:
While “pillow top” has come to have a somewhat loose definition, I decided that, for the purposes of this list, the mattress had to have at least one inch of padding above the foundation, that padding must be made of a separate material, and that this layer must be specifically intended for a plushier feel, since this would otherwise describe virtually all hybrid mattresses. Do note that this does include mattresses that may be better described as Euro top, such as the Aviya Hybrid and the Mellow Marshmallow, which have their upper comfort layers integrated seamlessly into the outer design and not separated by a quilted flap.
Also, keep in mind that, while this list took into account things like durability, quality of materials, and value for the money, mattress choice is a highly subjective matter. If you prefer a firm mattress, something like the Jacia House 11.4-Inch Hybrid may suit your needs better than the Suiforlun 12-Inch Hybrid. If you're not entirely sure of your preferences, you may want to consider leaning towards a rigid option, since you can easily add a mattress topper or mattress pad to soften the feel.
Innovation also factored into my decision-making, so things like the concentric coils of the Stearns & Foster Estate Collection and the advanced cooling technologies and wound steel coils of the Beautyrest Black C-Class helped to separate them from other mattresses. There are many other great options out there, and if you're not convinced you want a pillow top, maybe browse our lists of latex mattresses and therapeutic mattresses to see if the perfect choice for you is there.

Saatva Loom & Leaf A great choice for a high-quality memory foam mattress at a reasonable price. The upper layer utilizes different densities of gel-infused foams to help support the spine, and the foundation uses multiple layers for added stability and comfort. It's also compatible with the company's adjustable base for those who have trouble finding the right sleeping position. saatva.com
WinkBed This is a nice, mid-priced option. An innovative micro-coil layer just below the pillow top sets it apart as a notably supportive medium-softness mattress. It uses gel-infused foams, breathable fabrics, and a eucalyptus-derived cover to help keep temperatures low, and the lifetime warranty adds value. winkbeds.com
