The 10 Best Piano Tuner Kits
This wiki has been updated 31 times since it was first published in December of 2016. Even the finest piano sounds dreadful if it is not properly tuned, and while this process requires experience, patience, and either a digital tuner or a good ear for reference, it only needs a few basic tools to complete the task. These sets can be used to comprehensively tune the whole instrument, for touch-ups between professional appointments, or to make adjustments for humidity changes. Editor's Notes
October 09, 2020:
We have made four additions and two replacements to our previous list in this latest revision. These include the eminently portable Coolook 8-Piece, the basic but well-made Anlawin Size A, the compact-yet-comprehensive Sound Harbor Set, the handy Youjoy 10-Piece, the well-appointed YaeKoo 18-Piece, and the high-quality YZNlife Professional.
While each of these choices has its own beneficial properties, there are, generally speaking, three main components in a piano tuning kit, namely the wrench (often referred to as the "hammer"), rubber wedge-shaped mutes (usually some with elongated wire handles for harder to reach strings), and a felt ribbon, or "temperament strip" that is forced between the piano wire, and is often long enough to mute two octaves.
Even the more basic kits in our ranking provide at least these three essential tools, and some provide a much larger selection of accessories to help ensure the best possible results. For example, the YaeKoo 18-Piece, YZNlife Professional, Sound Harbor Set, and Anlawin Size A, all include a tuning fork with A4 (440 hertz) pitch for reference, as well as sprung mute clamps for easy damping of the treble section of the instrument.

When determining the best piano tuning kits, the quality of the hammer is of primary importance. But while the Schaff brand is favored by many professionals for it's sturdy hammer that won't loosen even when turning the tightest pins, we did rank the Miriam Song Professional set above the Schaff kit. The Miriam's hammer is of good quality and proportion for the average user, and comes in at a more reasonable price, plus the entire kit comes with a case.
While the average user will save themselves a lot of time and trouble by using an electric tuner or a You Tube video to get the right pitch, we decided to include the Lovebay Tools set because it comes with a tuning fork, for those who would like to try the old school method.
