The YETI Rambler Gallon Jug 2.0 tops the list on the strength of its tough build. Most of the old list had disappeared. The Stanley Rugged, Hydro Flask Oasis, Ultra Fyt, Rubbermaid Victory and the NFL Tailgate Keg are unavailable, the Topia LTD Gigantic listing is gone, and The Coldest Jug listing now sells a tumbler. The old Coleman plastic jug went too.
YETI and RTIC stay, since readers keep comparing them, but both have new models. The RTIC Outback Jug is a new design with a ceramic lining, and nobody has tested it yet, so we say so. New picks cover straw-lid bottles for the gym, a wide-mouth jug for ice, a job-site jug from Coleman and a sleeve bottle with pockets.
The surprise in the evidence: price doesn't buy colder water. In the one recent independent test we found, the Coolflask 128 oz warmed less over eight hours than the YETI did. What the money buys is a sturdier lid, a longer warranty and fewer leak reports.

There were fairly minimal updates made to this list, as it seems the market hasn't seen many drastic changes. We did remove a few items that were technically not insulated jugs, but rather insulated pouches for water jugs. Those have been replaced with a few new items that better suit the category.
It can be easy to see all insulated jugs as quite similar, but there are definitely features that set some apart from others. If it's going to be used to provide drinks for a lot of people, a side spout is a nice feature to look out for. Options like the Stanley Rugged and NFL Tailgate Keg are solid choices, though you could also pick something like the Topia LTD Gigantic, which has a side handle that makes it easy to pour. And if portability and insulation are ancillary to your needs, take a look at our list of water dispensers and see if these are along the lines of what you're looking for.
In terms of insulation, the most effective means of keeping beverages hot or cold is generally vacuum insulation. This means there are two separate layers of material, often both stainless steel, with a an empty space between the inner and outer layer. The Ultra Fyt Stainless Steel, Rtic One Gallon, and Yeti Rambler Jug all feature this type of design, and would be solid choices for those whose primary concern is minimizing heat transfer.
If you want something just for personal use, perhaps while hiking, working outdoors, or playing sports, we'd recommend a jug with a decent handle and a traditional top spout. The Coldest Jug has a flip-out straw in the lid, and the flexible handle on the Hydro Flask Oasis is designed to feel comfortable to carry, so both of these would be good for on-the-go use. Keep in mind, when full, all of these bottles will be quite heavy, so if you don't need such a high capacity, you may want to take a look at smaller water bottles to see if there's something there that suits your needs.

Also added several budget options, including those from Coleman and Rubbermaid, that would function well in rough environments.
Screw-Cap Jug, Straw Bottle Or Spigot Dispenser
Water alone weighs about 8.3 pounds a gallon, and steel jugs weigh 2.5 to 5 pounds empty, so a full one is 11 to 13 pounds.
Gallon jugs come in three main styles. Rugged screw-cap jugs, like the YETI, RTIC and Coleman models, have a big cap and a handle over the top. They're the toughest and the least likely to leak, but you drink by tipping a heavy jug. Straw-lid bottles, like the Coolflask, CIVAGO and RAYMYLO, swap lids so you can sip through a straw while you work out. Their lids have more small parts, and owners report more leaks and snapped lid handles. Spigot dispensers, such as Stanley's 2-gallon Adventure Fast Flow jug, are plastic with foam insulation and sit on a table or tailgate for a group.
Weight matters more than most people expect. Water alone weighs about 8.3 pounds a gallon, and steel jugs weigh 2.5 to 5 pounds empty, so a full one is 11 to 13 pounds. Chron's reviewers found the YETI the heaviest at 4 pounds 12 ounces empty, and said a handle on the body was easier to hold while filling than one on the lid. Check the mouth, too: a narrow mouth slows icing, and yourbestdigs found bottles with internal handles or tight necks the hardest to clean.
How Cold, And For How Long
Every maker publishes a cold claim, usually 24 or 48 hours, and those numbers come from the makers' own tests, often with ice and a closed lid. Independent tests tell a different story about price. In Chron's roundup, bottles sat by a pool for eight hours. The Coolflask and the Simple Modern Trek Pivot warmed about 5 degrees, a Stanley and an Ozark Trail about 7, and the YETI and Hydro Flask about 9. In a 48-hour ice test, yourbestdigs found the older RTIC and YETI jugs both held water near freezing for more than 36 hours.
So a double-wall steel gallon jug from any decent maker will keep ice water cold through a workday. Claims of two days need ice and a full jug. A reviewer at Water Bottle Advisor found the Coolflask's 48-hour claim closer to a day with ice. To get the most from any jug, fill it with ice and cold water, keep it out of the sun, and open it as little as you can. A full jug holds temperature longer than a half-empty one.
Leaks, Cleaning And Safe Use
Most leaks come from the lid gasket, not the steel. Seat the silicone ring evenly, tighten the cap, then check it again a few minutes later: yourbestdigs found that even the RTIC and YETI needed a second turn after five minutes. Straw and flip lids have more seals, so keep a straw bottle upright in a bag.
Follow the maker's care card. YETI and RTIC say their jugs are dishwasher safe, while many straw-lid bottles call for hand washing, and heat can wear powder coat and seals. Thermos suggests a bottle brush, warm soapy water and a baking-soda soak for smells. RTIC's care card also says to skip bleach and never put the jug in a microwave or freezer.
A few safety points apply to all of them. Don't seal carbonated drinks in an insulated jug, since pressure builds. Hot drinks build pressure too, so fill partway, open the cap slowly and never drink hot liquid through a straw. We checked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall database for every brand here: no gallon jug on this list has been recalled.
