The 10 Best Memory Foam Mattresses
This wiki has been updated 31 times since it was first published in November of 2017. Sleep technology has come a long way since the days of creaky box springs and sagging metal coils. Memory foam is exceptionally plush and comfortable, and its construction is only getting more consistent and durable. There's an increasing number of manufacturers turning to a hybrid design that combines traditional and foam materials, so we've included some of those, as well. When users buy our independently chosen editorial recommendations, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.
Editor's Notes
May 15, 2020:
Buying a mattress without testing it out first can be a daunting task. It's important to take a new memory foam mattress out of the box as soon as you receive it, and give it at least 48 hours to expand. During that period, it may or may not release an unpleasant odor, like the one sometimes reported with the Live & Sleep Ultra, but as long as it's CertiPur-US certified, the chemicals it off-gasses shouldn't be harmful. Additionally, many modern mattresses come with long-term warranty periods, which should contribute to your peace of mind. The Modway Aveline is one exception to that warranty rule, although at its low price, you might not be too upset if it doesn't last forever.
A lot of the models we've listed are independently certified as safe, including the Zinus Ultima, which is a great deal and suitable for those who prefer a soft surface over a firm one. The same can be said of the Revel Custom Cool, which uses open-cell foam on top and claims to offer a cooler sleeping experience. We would advise, however, that many mattresses and mattress toppers that claim to use cooling gel are just utilizing marketing tactics. To most effectively overcome the heat issues that sometimes plague all-foam models, consider a hybrid mattress.
Hybrid mattresses are becoming more and more popular, and models such as the Zinus iCoil, which is extra firm, and the Sweetnight 10-Inch, use both foam and coils to isolate movement and provide plush yet supportive surfaces. If you're willing to make a sizable investment, though, it's hard to beat the Leesa Hybrid, which is suitable for users of many different body types and one of the most popular hybrid options on the market.
If you're not completely confident in buying a new mattress yet, you might be able to eke a little more time out of your current one by picking up a new topper.
