Thankfully, there is an abundance of lubricants available to mitigate these issues and keep things running smoothly. We’ve put together a list of versatile selections that are simple to apply and can prevent damage from wear and corrosion. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.
Editor's Notes
March 10, 2021:
It was a quick round of updates for us, as the vast majority of our existing selections for this category continued to be great choices for this application. The only real substantive change we made was removing the LiquiFix Zero VOC, due to availability issues, and replacing it with the Leafy Earth Friendly — which caught our eye with its non-toxic formula, striking a sharp contrast between it and the many chemical-based offerings in this space. Granted, the average user looking to get a squeak out of their garage door probably isn’t overly concerned with the makeup of their product they’re using, but we still thought it was worth including this choice as a purpose-made option that might appeal to the environmentally-conscious among us. It’s also an odorless option, which many will appreciate.

When selecting a lubricant for your garage door, it's good to know exactly what parts you'll be applying it to, since you have trolleys, openers, hinges, latches, locks, torsion springs and more to consider. Many of our selections are intended for use on multiple mechanisms, but we included Lubriplate Aero LBR-S for those who require something specialized for their opening device. We also incorporated formulas with silicone, lithium, mineral, and ceramic bases to cater to a litany of temperatures and operating needs. For the most part, we added items that administer via aerosol cans and spray bottles, with some that come with a special straw for precise application (such as Liquid Wrench L616, B'laster Industrial Strength, and 3-In-One Professional). For tubed products, like Lubriplate Multi-Purpose, you only need to apply a small bead before opening and closing your door a few times to let it spread. We added LiquiFix Zero-VOC for consumers who are looking for an environmentally friendly option.
