The 10 Best Lego Robots
This wiki has been updated 28 times since it was first published in March of 2018. As if the allure of the bricks themselves weren't compelling enough, Lego construction becomes an even more entertaining and fun STEM learning experience when combined with robotics. Incorporating sensory and propulsion components, programmable configurations and favorite characters from popular movies, these kits provide hours of creative activities for kids of all ages. Editor's Notes
November 15, 2019:
Lego robots offer a clever way to ensure your child is learning without realizing it, as many sets are just as educational as dedicated STEM toys while bringing that classic Lego brand of fun. We wanted this list to showcase everything from simple, entry-level robots with plenty of play value to customizable options that teach coding, strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and encourage collaboration.
While we hated to get rid of the Iron Man Detroit Steel and Ninjago Water Strider, we felt this list needed a little more balance when it came to toys that are simply built, like the BB-8 Droid and Ninjago Salvage M.E.C., and sets that involve programming and customization. That's why we added the Education WeDo 2.0 and Boost Droid Commander to fill the vacancies. They join the Mindstorms EV3 and Boost Creative Toolbox as formidable STEM toys.
When it comes to the Boost Droid Commander, there is a lot to like. Kids who love tinkering will have tons of fun with it, and it's complemented by a rich storyline via a free app that's as compelling as a video game. The downside is that there are no physical instructions, nor are they provided in PDF form or elsewhere online. They are only available in story form through the app. This can be frustrating for those who like to simply build without having to consult their smartphone or tablet, but if you're the type who appreciates the additional engagement, then it will be a home run.
For simpler robotics fun, the Creator Future Flyers, Ideas Wall-E, and Technic RC Tracked Racer are all solid selections. If you're looking for something to test the waters at an entry-level price and difficulty level, then the Creator Explorer is ideal.
