This wiki has been updated 28 times since it was first published in January of 2018. Thought by some users to be inferior to their LED optical sensor equipped counterparts, laser mice are still notable for superior tracking on a multitude of surfaces. They're appreciated both by gamers who demand quick responses and frequent travelers who can't rely on ideal working conditions. Here are some of the best designed for use on a variety of desks and other structures. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

April 23, 2020:

In truth, there aren't a ton of laser mice out there anymore, and there never really have been. By the time laser sensors matured, common optical sensors had basically met and exceeded their performance levels, and few manufacturers are currently pushing the subject. If you need a mouse that can track on nearly any surface, though, and an optical mouse just won't cut it, there are some good options. The Logitech MX Master 3 and Logitech MX Anywhere 2S are two of the few that actually use recently updated laser technology; rather than one laser, they use two, and track on even more surfaces than standard laser sensors, with the low latency and reliability of a high-end optical sensor. The flagship MX Master 3 has plenty of buttons to choose from and customize, while the Anywhere 2S has the 7 buttons common to compact, yet advanced devices; the only real drawback to the Anywhere 2S is that its scroll wheel doesn't function as a middle button, but only as a toggle between smooth and click-to-advance scrolling; the middle button is located just below the scroll wheel, so if you frequently use the scroll wheel and middle button in quick succession, this tiny detail may actually be a dealbreaker for you.

The Logitech G602 is a slightly older yet still quite advanced model from modern leader in pointing devices; it does look pretty flashy but it works just as well in an office as a game lobby, and it, like the G.Skill Ripjaws MX780, features a recessed frame that helps to keep airflow up and minimize sweating over long periods. The TeckNet Hypertrak M009 is yet another aggressively designed model that works great as long as you can get it installed and the software set up properly, while the UTechSmart Venus is especially handy if you need instant access to up to 12 customizable macro keys.

If you're not attached to a laser mouse, consider one of the many additional gaming and wireless mice on the market today. A high-quality mousepad might also make a significant difference for a lot of users.
