The 10 Best Indoor Outdoor Rugs

video play icon

This wiki has been updated 25 times since it was first published in June of 2018. Most rugs are designed either for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. These options are rugged enough to withstand any weather conditions, from harsh sun to snowy winters, yet often stylish enough for use inside your home. They're resistant to rot, mildew, and fading, and some have nonslip rubber backings to hold them in place even when wet. They tend to dry out quickly, too. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

May 21, 2020:

There are, generally speaking, two kinds of indoor/outdoor rugs: those meant for business use, where style isn't terribly important, and those meant for home or customer-facing use, where it makes sense to have something that looks good. For the former instance, it's tough to beat the Andersen WaterHog and M and A Matting WaterHog Eco in particular. They both have a raised edge made from a durable polymer that prevents liquids from spilling onto the surrounding area, and they're both offered in a variety of sizes and colors. The Anderson isn't very expensive, while the M+A Matting is. The House, Home, and More Carpet is similar in that it doesn't have any patterning, and while it lacks a raised edge, it still offers plenty of traction and it's especially thin. In fact, due to its thinness and relatively low price, it's a good option for keeping a nice garage floor free from stains and damage. For that matter, if you're looking for something to protect your garage, there are quite a few good choices for doing so.

There are also plenty of models that are just as focused on form as function. We really like the Orian Rugs Veranda due to its neat patterning and contrasting colors, as well as the Mad Mats Turkish, which has an elegant Middle Eastern appearance. The Nourison Aloha is another that's especially interesting to look at, and it has just about the boldest color scheme and pattern combination of any on our list.

You certainly don't have to go with something bright and bold, though. The Ottomanson Jardin has a relatively muted appearance, as does the Safavieh Courtyard, which is calm and good-looking without being boring. The Unique Loom Trellis Collection is particularly worthy of consideration if you're looking to outfit already established decor, because the variety it comes in is second to almost none.
