This wiki has been updated 26 times since it was first published in February of 2018. Enjoying the great outdoors together can be an excellent bonding activity for you and your child. Teaching kids how to shoot, camp, and fish can be a lot of fun, but some activities are just too dangerous until they reach the right age. In the meantime, get your little ones some of these hunting toys designed to introduce them to the tools of the trade or let their imaginations run wild. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

June 04, 2020:

Looking over the toys included on our previous list, we found that the AGreatLife Slingshot posed too great a risk in the hands of a child. Sure it could be used with relatively safe ammunition, but it wouldn't take much for a youngster to swap out foam balls for rocks or ball bearings, and that could do some serious damage. We replaced it with something designed to teach kids about safely handling hunting equipment in the JJ's LockBack Wooden Pocket, a fake knife that's shaped and built just like the real thing. You might hate that you have to assemble it, but making that part of the bonding experience could also show you and your kid just how such a knife's spring mechanism works.

We also added the Sunny Days Pop Up Tent, which could be used as a legitimate shooting blind for a small enough hunter, but that definitely serves as a little fort that's super easy for kids to set up inside or out. And we upgraded the previous selection of walkie talkies to the Motorola Talkabout T265, because they're durable enough to be handled by children, and easy enough for young people to use. If you look at them side by side with a lot of modern kids walkies, they're almost identical, so it makes sense to invest in these now and let the whole family use them rather than overspending on underperforming childrens' options.

Special Honors

New Ray Green Camo Single Barrel With an official license from Winchester, this fake gun bears the same proportions as the real thing, with a functioning scope on top for sighting targets. It has an orange tip to indicate that it isn't dangerous, but it features a shell ejection function, as well as lights and sounds designed to make the firing experience more authentic for kids. newrayusa.com
