This wiki has been updated 26 times since it was first published in February of 2018. If you’re preparing for a hunting excursion, equipping yourself with the right gear is vital. When it comes to which knives to carry, that is a personal choice, but most will want an effective gut hook and a strong fixed blade at the minimum, and all of these sets will provide that. Some also offer additional blades along with useful accessories, like sharpeners and gloves. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.
Editor's Notes
February 01, 2021:
Good knives are vital equipment for every hunter to carry, whether that be for getting themselves out of an emergency situation or field dressing their kill. Here you'll find a nice selection of reliable options that you can feel comfortable carrying and knowing they will perform when needed. That being said, though not a hard and fast rule, with the exception of the Buck PakLite Field Master, you'll often find that knives that come in sets are of mid-range quality and if you truly want a premium blade, you should look to buy your hunting knives individually. However, expect to pay considerably more when doing so.

Any hunter worth their salt knows the value of a good knife, which is exactly what we have here. However, we will take a moment to point out that the very best hunting knives rarely come in sets, so if you want a premium blade, not only will you have to buy each one separately and put together your own kit, but you'll have to spend a lot of money, too. That being said, we think most people will be more than happy with any options on this list.
If you simply need a few blades for field dressing and want something that won't feel like its weighing you down as you stalk your prey all day, you should look to the Buck Knives PakLite, Mossy Oak Fixed Blade, Gerber Moment Field Dress, Mossy Oak 2-Piece, Elk Ridge ER-300CA. Each of these comes with just two or three lightweight knives and sheathes that can attach to a belt for convenient carrying. The Elk Ridge ER-252 falls into the same category when it comes to ease of carrying, but actually includes a bone saw, as well. Of the aforementioned sets, the Buck Knives PakLite and Mossy Oak Fixed Blade are our favorites due to their attractive design and high-quality build.
Those prefer something a bit more comprehensive that can handle all of their butchering needs will want to look to the Outdoor Edge Game Processor, Outdoor Edge Butcher Lite, Red Deer Field Kit, and Elk Ridge ER-190. These all include a nice variety of tools and, except for the Red Deer Field Kit, also come with some kind of sharpener. As you might expect though from these larger sets, they will be slightly less convenient to carry, so you might want to leave them at your campsite, rather than lugging them in your pack all day.

Puma Waidbesteck Set One of the few sets you can find that includes premium blades, the Puma Waidbesteck comes with a waidblatt — a large, machete-like knife that has a heavy, weight-forward design perfect for hacking through brush and other tough material — and a jagdnicker — a smaller knife that is ideal for skinning or quickly finishing an animal after taking them down. Both have striking stag horn scales secured via three brass pins. pumaknifecompanyusa.com
