Editor's Notes

November 09, 2020:

While the company has moved away from certain model lines, they've upgraded some notable others, like the HK SoundSticks 4, which may be their most iconic design to date, and that was certainly overdue for an upgrade. This iteration has a nice signal to noise ratio and comes in a bright white color, but the placement of its pairing and power controls on the back of the subwoofer makes them tough to access.

Users looking for a single purchase that might tick all the boxes without breaking the bank should consider the Enchant 1300. It can act as the main speaker for your entertainment center whether or not you choose to augment its low end with a subwoofer like the Enchant 10-Inch. It creates a kind of virtual surround by bouncing sound vibrations around your room, which might make it the next best thing to the complete home theater package offered in the High Performance 5.1.

March 26, 2019:

Given the fact that everything on this list comes from the same manufacturer, the focus when evaluating their lineup was on sound quality above all else, but it was also certainly influenced by the potential uses of a given product. For example, the Go+Play model at number four could arguably be said to possess superior sound stats than our number one pick, but the differences between the two were slight enough, and the superior portability of the latter so obvious, that it failed to compete for the top spot. The Invoke was something of a surprise, as you might not expect a Microsoft model to gain ground over something tuned for Alexa, but it genuinely outperforms its Amazon-oriented cousin.

Special Honors

Harman Kardon Citation 300 This model features a nifty little touchscreen on top that displays useful information such as song titles, artists, and even album art. It's available in grey and black with a blended wool fabric cover that is both dust-resistant and flame-retardant, and its software includes Google Assistant, making this a nice choice for home automation. harmankardon.com

Harman Kardon Citation Tower If you have the space to spare, these particularly tall offerings will completely fill your space with high-fidelity sound. They can interface with other units in their product line to create a multi-room experience, and they offer 200 watts of power each. They are among the company's more expensive choices, however. harmankardon.com
