Editor's Notes
May 06, 2020:
Our latest update required an extensive overhaul of this list, with several volumes falling out of date and two new items added to replace For Dummies and Steck-Vaughn Student Edition, both of which have not been revised since 2014. While the GED has not been rigorously updated since that year, it has seen a handful of tweaks in the interim, so students are best off with volumes that are no older than four years. For the upcoming round, the content will remain the same but the test will see a few formatting changes. This means the material in a 2018, 2017, or 2016 book will still be relevant.
Books that have been updated to newer or reevaluated editions are Kaplan's GED Test Prep Plus, McGraw-Hill's Preparation for the GED Test, Mometrix's GED Test Prep, Princeton Review GED Test Prep, and GED Math Preparation. We also supplemented our selection with 1,001 GED Practice Questions For Dummies for those who are relatively confident they have learned what they need, but want reinforcement and to gauge areas in which they could improve. Then, we brought on The GED Tutor Book, a no-muss option great for review, but be aware that it is not meant to teach the material. If you're older and have been out of school for a while and need something more intensive, Preparation for the GED Test and GED Test Prep Plus are your best bets.
Just as with our ACT and SAT test prep guides, we prioritized selections that are comprehensive, written by authorities in the field, full of study strategies, and designed to help you not only become comfortable with the material as it is presented on the exam specifically but also capable of helping you boost your score.
