This wiki has been updated 27 times since it was first published in March of 2017. Moving heavy furniture and appliances into, out of, or around your home or office need not be a back-breaking chore if you have the appropriate hardware to help you handle the load. These dollies let you maneuver a couch, fridge, file cabinet, and more into position easily. Some are also useful in the yard or a workshop, so you'll probably want to keep one or two around past moving day. Editor's Notes
September 14, 2020:
We still think that the NK Furniture, thanks to a sturdy construction and range of available sizes, represents a good value, but we've added the somewhat similar Milwaukee Hand Trucks Poly as a budget-friendly alternative. This Milwaukee model is made of plastic, but it is reinforced with steel for added strength. There's also the Milwaukee Hand Trucks Gleason, with a hardwood construction, but this model is quite small at 15 inches square, so choose it for those smaller jobs.
Because we like the versatility the changeable size offers, we also kept the Spacecare Telescopic Adjustable. You'll have to assemble it yourself, and the instructions aren't all that fantastic; however, the affordable price and locking wheels make up for any small drawbacks. But note that this model, as well as the Shepherd Hardware 9854, have a more modest capacity than many.
Finally, a word about safety. No matter which furniture dolly you choose, remember that these items are not meant for use on stairs, nor are all of the included models safe for hardwood floors. Hard rubber or plastic wheels could scratch floors; you can avoid this by laying down moving blankets and covering them with a board, so that the wheels don't actually roll over the flooring.
August 08, 2019:
If you've ever moved heavy items like furniture or appliances without one, you know how important a good furniture dolly can be to your health and sanity.
You'll of course want one that's built to handle the load you want to put on it, but you should also look for one whose wheels won't mar your floors. The wheels on some dollies have plastic ridges that can scratch wood. In addition, the larger the wheels, the more easily they roll on carpet or uneven surfaces. Swiveling casters will make maneuvering easier.
In this update, we evaluated items based on quality and suitability for the job. We removed an item due to concerns about its availability and added the BISupply Corner, whose low loading profile should make it easier to use than some others with a higher profile. Also promoted the NK Furniture Unit to a top slot for its durability and large, four-inch wheels.

Uline Solid Top With the Uline Solid Top, you can choose between a hardwood and a carpeted top, but either way, the bolts used to construct the dolly are completely sunk, so you don't have to worry about accidental damage. There are also several sizes available, with 3- or 4-inch rubber wheels that conveniently swivel. uline.com
Global Industrial Hydraulic The price and size of the Global Industrial Hydraulic mean that it is probably overkill for at-home or occasional duty, but for professionals, this robust unit will get the job done. It raises and lowers at controlled speeds for safety, while the 16-inch nylon strap keeps furniture secure during use. globalindustrial.com
