This wiki has been updated 27 times since it was first published in February of 2017. A sturdy pole and an attractive lure aren't the only tools the well-prepared angler ought to have on hand when setting out to catch a stringer full of fish. A quality pair of pliers can save you a whole lot of trouble and grief once your prize is caught and ready to be unhooked. Whether you need a model suitable for fresh or saltwater, one of these options will be ideal for the job. September 10, 2019:
Removed the Suaoki Stainless Steel, the Piscifun Braid Cutter, and the Buck Knives Splizzors because of availability issues. Added the Wolfyok Aluminum, the Cuda 18112, and the Kastking Cutthroat.
The Cutthroat are all-around great fishing pliers that will work well for both freshwater and saltwater anglers. A common issue with some specialty fishing pliers that work in saltwater is that either they are made from steel for toughness and ultimately rust, or that they are made of aluminum for rust resistance and ultimately bend. The Cutthroat is made of steel but the Teflon prevents it from rusting. The Cuda is a very affordable and well-built set. I like it because, personally, I prefer it when my fishing pliers have the wire cutter built into the jaws as opposed to having some cutter heads affixed to the side. They tend to be tougher and last longer.
