The 6 Best Engine Cradles

This wiki has been updated 18 times since it was first published in January of 2020. Although automotive engines weigh hundreds of pounds, it is easy to forget that they are finely-tuned machines that can be easily damaged. These cradles are designed to be strong enough to support them when you are working on them, but light enough to move around easily. We've selected choices appropriate for a variety of makes and models, so there's something here for everyone. When users buy our independently chosen editorial choices, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

May 28, 2021:

We're excited to rework the Wiki this time around and offer a singular model that's head and shoulders above much of the competition. The Allstar Performance Series comes in various distinct formats, each meant specifically for a different motor. It even offers separate configurations for small and large block Chevys and there's one tailored for use with a Hemi. We strongly recommend this option for anyone who wants a hassle-free building or maintenance experience.

Otherwise, one company offers a variety of distinct options that cost notably less than our top pick. The Speedway Motors Stand, Speedway Motors Chevy and Speedway Motors GM are all perfectly functional devices, the last of which is a good choice for crowded garages thanks to its small footprint. We also included the Redline SD1K, which is the top option for motorcycle and ATV enthusiasts.

Engine hoists are a must for pulling a motor, but what's the next step after getting it out? Whether you are freshening up the block or swapping an engine, it would be difficult to do either one while the motor is dangling from a chain. Engine stands are convenient if you need to rotate the whole assembly to access the crankshaft, but some find them somewhat awkward to push around. Cradles, on the other hand, offer maneuverability that's tough to beat.

Jegs is a big name in the automotive sector, so it is no surprise that we included two of their models. The cradle is the same whether you choose the Jegs 80064 or the Jegs Block-Off Kit, but the latter has the kit, as the name suggests, which is a nice added feature for preventing damage inside the intake manifold or ports.

You may also notice that there is a striking absence of cradles compatible with Ford engines. There are other options available, but as of this review, the Tril Gear Ford is the only Ford V8 compatible cradle that is built well and doesn't require modifications to get the mounting brackets to line up.

While Chevy engines do not change much from one year to the next, there are still nuances to keep in mind. As an example, the Motoos 1000lb offers a versatile application, while the Speedway Motors GM Chevy V8 LSx fits the multi-generation LS.

Do not attempt to repair or modify an engine without professional technical instruction or experience.
