The 10 Best Ear Savers For Masks

video play icon

This wiki has been updated 16 times since it was first published in July of 2020. Most face masks use loops that hook over your ears, and while this may work adequately for short periods, many find that it can become painful if they are worn continuously for long periods. These clever little ear savers are inexpensive and allow you to maintain proper mask tightness while simultaneously taking pressure off your ears to help prevent pain and chafing. Editor's Notes

August 28, 2020:

The most common type of mask saver is the thin variety exemplified by models such as the Miaodam Holder and Sunzel Extension Hook. These selections are affordable and simple to use, so it's not surprising that many find these to be perfectly adequate options for their needs. That being said, they are not always the best choice because of certain limitations. For example, these fixed models usually have a few sets of hooks that offer three or four levels of tightness, but selections like the Retail Sign Systems Extender and Huaxu Extender use continuous buckle mechanisms to offer a wider, more precise adjustment range.

Evglow Extended Grips and the Feeke Silicone Strap set themselves apart with silicone constructions that are both thick and soft. These options both feature large buttons for attaching your mask's strings, and while this makes them generally easier to use the tradeoff is a lack of security. If you're frequently taking your mask off and putting it back on these options may be subpar since they won't continue to hold your bands without tension. In contrast, if you want something that will stay attached even when your mask is removed and provides a grip adequate for vigorous activities you may want to look at something like the Linidi Extension Strap, which uses carabiners to hold your masks straps and in turn makes it almost impossible for them to slip out during use.

Some users may find that all of the previously mentioned options are less than ideal for their situation since grippy materials like silicone and small hooks can easily become tangled in long hair. Not everyone reports this problem and some fix it by wearing particular hairstyles, but the Bani Bands Headband presents an interesting solution that protects your hair by avoiding it altogether. Rather than hooking around your ears or resting against the back of your head this specialized headband allows you to attach your mask via two large buttons, which provides a fit that is both comfortable and secure.

Regardless of which model you choose make sure that it does not adversely affect the fit of your mask, in which case it could reduce the effectiveness of said mask and in turn put you at elevated risk. In addition to masks, you may want to check out our other articles on products such as hand soaps, face shields, and respirators that can offer additional protection.

Special Honors

Baggu Fabric Mask Set This mask from Baggu attaches with wide, soft ties rather than narrow bands. Instead of hooking around your ears these ties rest against the back of your head and neck, so this is a an alternative solution to consider if other mask types have been consistently hurting your ears. Several color options are available, and each order contains three comfortable masks. baggu.com
