The 10 Best Director Chairs
This wiki has been updated 17 times since it was first published in April of 2020. The iconic director's chair is an incredibly functional piece of furniture that is usually associated with the film industry, movie sets, and stage performances. Their popularity stems from their versatile design, as they are foldable and easy to carry. Modern versions still use the cross-frame structure but are made from more durable materials, making them ideal for outdoor use. Editor's Notes
May 25, 2020:
As the name implies, these chairs evoke the stereotypical image of a movie director sitting on location, shouting out orders to a frantic cast and crew. However, the modern style seen today was only introduced in 1892 by the Gold Medal Camp Furniture company, and were based on the coffer-makers' chairs of the 15th century. Most recently, while the wood and canvas style is still popular, the scissor action structure has been re-developed using high-strength, lightweight materials, making them particularly well suited to outdoor uses, such as barbecues and camping trips.
Fans of the original design will be pleased to know that it is still readily available. The Filmcraft Professional is a direct replica of the award-winning model, whereas Casual Home offers the chair in three different heights, a range of colors, and with a much cheaper price tag. The Filfeel Artist Makeup Chair has the same styling but uses aluminum and nylon, making it durable and corrosion resistant, and the Kotula's Natural is a reasonably priced, upmarket version that uses acacia-wood due to its naturally weather-resistant properties.
Those looking for a lightweight option may want to consider the Timber Ridge Viburnum, the HJ Fishing Chair, or the DDPP Satchel, all of which have aluminum frames, waterproof seating, and are compact when stored. The MacSports MacRocker is equally as functional in the great outdoors and has an integrated rocking system, bringing an enhanced level of comfort to this classic piece of furniture.
