Editor's Notes
May 13, 2020:
During this round of updates, we decided on removing the Bull Run 6” and Pronghorn Uninsulated Hunting due to availability issues, and we also eliminated the Crafter Romeo 3”, recognizing that it lacked some basic prerequisite qualities for this category. Our new inclusions this time around are the Mountain Hiking Boot – a low-cut model that’s great for hitting the trails or mixing into your streetwear, the Bull Run Wellington – a slip-on option with an 11-inch rise, and the Stronghold 6" – which, in spite of being a comfortable pair that offers good support, lacks a serviceable safety toe.
A few things to think about for this category:
Safety Toes: If you’re purchasing this pair of boots for work on a job site with strict safety regulations, make sure you pay special attention to this, as models without an approved toe might not be allowed on site. While the Mountain Hiking Boot does have a nylon shank to help protect the bottom of your foot, it doesn’t have any safety toe to speak of, and neither does the Stronghold 6".
Options like the Trakwelt NMT and Vicious 4.5" Non Metallic, which feature a composite safety toe, are favored by many people in the trades, as they’re durable, lightweight and less prone to to getting cold in extreme temperatures. But many others have an old-school mentality, and still consider a true steel toe – like the one in the Bull Run Wellington to be the gold standard in safety. (note that “non-metallic toe” is the verbage used by Danner to describe what would most often be described colloquially as a composite toe.)
Danner also has a third style of safety toe available that’s quite popular. Models like the Quarry USA BR have an alloy toe which, despite being bulkier than their steel counterparts, are noticeably lighter, and therefore sometimes favored. All Danner safety toes meet ASTM standards.
Support: How much you need is going to depend on what you’re doing. While the Bull Run Wellington have a generous 11-inch rise, their lack of laces equate to a proportionate lack of support, and therefore they won’t make the best choice for many people at work.
For long days on your feet, doing a lot of heavy lifting, we recommend an eight-inch, lace-up model like the Super Rain Forest 200 Gram or Logger 8" 400G NMT, which will offer you quite a lot of support.
But if you’re going to be a lot of walking, and not so much lifting, you might find that a lighter, low-cut option like the Stronghold 6" or even the Mountain Hiking Boot might be a better choice, as they tend to be more comfortable and take longer to induce fatigue.
Warranty: Danner offers a one-year replacement warranty to original purchasers of any of its boots, providing that they haven’t been improperly used, and your complaint extends past the effects of standard wear and tear.
