Editor's Notes

December 10, 2020:

For this update, we replaced the Sun Joe Brushless with the Sun Joe 24V-X2, a newer model that provides an additional inch of cutting width, as well as 48-Volts instead of 40, at only a very small price difference.

We also upgraded our previous Worx option, the Worx Electric, to the Worx WG743. This new addition features intellicut technology, which essentially allows you to adjust the torque of the mower as you work, so you can crank up the power when you come across thick grass areas, and then dial it back down when you’re back to regular grass. This reduces wasted energy and extends the runtime of the unit, a valuable feature when dealing with battery-powered equipment.

We added a third Greenworks brand mower to our list, the Greenworks 2508302. Greenworks is one of the most popular brands in the outdoor power equipment market, and have a wide range of battery-powered products like leaf blowers, chainsaws, and weed eaters. If you’re interested in going all-electric with your personal yard work equipment, any of the Greenworks mowers listed here would be a great start. The best thing about sticking to one brand is that you’ll always have a supply of compatible batteries on hand, reducing valuable time spent waiting on chargers.

Even though these cordless lawn mowers are safer for the environment than traditional gas-powered options, they’re still extremely dangerous machines. Always read the user manual and safety instructions before you even turn on your mower, and never allow children around them unattended. Make sure to always wear closed-toe shoes while operating your mower, and safety goggles with side shields to protect against flying debris.

If you have a large lawn or property over ¾ of an acre, you may want to consider a riding lawn mower. These aren’t cheap, but their large decks and comfortable seats get the job done efficiently and with little effort from the user.

Or, if you want to outsource lawn cutting altogether, one of these robotic mowers might be a better option. Some models can even be connected to your home automation systems, allowing you to program when and how you want your grass to be cut.

May 02, 2019:

One of the first electric models that rivaled the performance of gas mowers, the Ego Power+ has a 20-inch cutting width and can run for up to 90 minutes on a full charge, making it suitable for larger yards than most others. Its weather-resistant construction and LED headlights mean you can use it just about anytime, and the included rapid charger can recharge the battery in just 30 minutes. The Echo 58V4AH is a powerful high-voltage model with a 21-inch deck and adjustable handle that makes it comfortable for users of almost all heights. One of few self-propelled models, the Snapper XD Max has an easy-to-use speed control lever and comes with a 2Ah battery, but you can swap it for a 4Ah or 5Ah battery if you need a longer runtime.

If you have a super small yard, an inexpensive model like the Worx Electric may suit your needs. It's extremely lightweight and doesn't take up much storage space, but the 24V battery has a much shorter runtime than more powerful ones and sometimes needs to be recharged in less than 30 minutes. The Black+Decker 3-in-1 is another good option for tiny lawns. It only weighs about 10 pounds and can also be used for trimming and edging, and its 12-inch deck can get into hard-to-reach spots that others can't.

Special Honors

Stihl RMA 510 Made by one of the most trusted brands in power equipment, the Stihl RMA 510 features a wide 21-inch deck, and a convenient slot for keeping a backup battery on hand. Its locking key also makes this an especially safe model, reducing the chances of accidental starts. If you're looking for a high-quality machine that can tackle small to medium-sized yards, this is a great choice. stihlusa.com
