This wiki has been updated 20 times since it was first published in November of 2018. Kitchen space is some of the most valuable real estate in the home, but serious gourmands understand that you need a variety of machines and contraptions to prepare meals that are worthy of Instagram. These convection microwaves solve at least one of those problems, as they combine two gadgets in one, creating room on your countertops without forcing you to choose between appliances. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

December 02, 2020:

The value of a convection microwave lies in the convenience of combining two devices in one, and many manufacturers are working to pack even more functionality into these appliances. Our new #2 pick, the Panasonic NN-CD87KS, includes air frying and broiling capabilities, while also performing well as a traditional microwave. It saves on space thanks to its sleek design, and on electricity thanks to its innovative linear heat adjustment. The slightly less expensive Farberware Gourmet lacks this last feature, but provides dehydrating and slow-cooking options, along with lots of preset cooking programs.

We had to eliminate a few entries based on availability concerns or poor feedback. The Cuisinart CMW-200 was notoriously prone to breaking down, and customer reports indicated that its convection performance wasn't very robust even while it worked. And despite being sold as an over-the-stove model, the GE Profile Advantium had an inadequate ventilation fan and was fairly sensitive to heat. We also replaced the Daewoo KOC-9HAFDB with the less costly and more powerful Galanz 3-in-1 SpeedWave. This multifunctional device is offered in two different sizes, the larger of which has an impressive 1.6 cubic feet of interior space.

Our last addition is the Amazon Smart Oven, which uses Alexa to receive voice commands and alert users when food is done, along with a number of automated cooking features. Some reviewers find its AI more frustrating than helpful, but those willing to navigate the learning curve will likely appreciate its time-saving functions.

Feel free to check out our other lists of kitchen appliances, whether you're looking for a soup maker, a pressure cooker, or even something more exotic like a solar oven. And no chef, amateur or professional, should be without a good set of oven mitts or pot holders.

November 06, 2018:

Users should consider the layout of their cooking space before purchasing any items, as some kitchens would benefit from over-the-range models, whereas others have enough room to accommodate countertop options.
