First place still goes to the Kasebi Victorian ES100, the classic flat steel clamshell most people picture, which costs very little for an all-metal case. From the 2020 version we also kept the Leatherboss Pack Holder (listed before as the Leather Boss Pouch) and the Somgem Waterproof, and added six cases, including the Roygra Magnetic flip-top, the Eyidadae 1010 for 100s and the Skyway Kendrick, which takes 120s. The Gary & Ghost Ultrathin, the Stephanie Imports Classic and the Cig-U Copper can no longer be bought, and the Stephanie Imports Black is now sold only as a pricier two-case set, so they're gone. We replaced the Lorwing Module, the Ehonestbuy Mini Round and the Kywa Automatic with stronger options.
We stopped at nine because most other cases for sale are copies of these designs under different names. We also left out rolling boxes, which make cigarettes rather than carry them. No lab or magazine has tested cigarette cases, so fit here comes from makers' size charts and length limits, durability from owner reports on failing clasps and latches, and each brand got a recall check. Hansaware, the German maker of stamped metal cases, stays as a special honor.

For this update we decided to replace a few options in order to provide users with more variety. For instance, the Leather Boss Pouch was previously our only entry that held an entire pack with the box included, so we decided to add the Somgem Case and Lorwing Module in order to provide some more choices in this category. The advantage of this design compared to clamshell models is its super easy reloading process. One can simply pull out the old box and replace it with a new one rather than handling each cigarette individually, which saves you time and reduces the possibility of you accidentally dropping smokes. They prevent crushing just as well as most other cases, and the rugged Somgem Case is particularly well suited to use while hiking or camping due to its water resistance.
While many options on the market come with built-in electric lighters, most of them utilize a heated-coil design that has been largely supplanted by dual-arc plasma lighters over the past several years. Though it is functional the heated-coil type requires you to touch your cigarette directly to the case, a design flaw which often leads the coil and the surrounding area to be caked in ash relatively quickly. The dual-arc plasma variety has less of a problem with this, and is also generally considered to have a superior cool factor. For this reason we decided to add the Kywa Automatic, as it is one of the few models to feature this newer lighter design. Additionally it has an auto-ejection function that some might enjoy, however it is important to note that users have reported the mechanism is more reliable when only 16 to 18 cigarettes are loaded, which is a definite downside for some.

We added the Honb Aluminum Wallet in place of the Groupcow Extra Slim. Both models are quite similar, but the Honb version is just a few millimeters thicker and provides RFID protection for times when you may want to use it to hold credit cards while travelling. This makes the case useful even if you decide to quit smoking one day.
We replaced the Focus Automatic because the cigarette-ejecting function wasn't reliable, plus it stored a lighter, but the Kakaka Slim we added actually has an integrated lighter that doesn't need any fuel or gas to function, and the top simply pops open so you don't have to worry about anything malfunctioning.
Special Honors
Hansaware Hansaware has made metalware in Germany since 1919, and its pocket cases are still struck from original dies from the 1920s and 1930s in crush-resistant, nickel-plated steel, marked with the maker's name. Designs such as the Dresden, Paris and Prague hold cigarettes under elastic bands, which the company sells as replacements. Pocket cases run from about $55 to $180, and it also sells leatherette and buckskin cases and German metal boxes. hansaware.com
Sizes And Fit
Thickness matters more than width for a shirt or trouser pocket.
Check length first. Regular cigarettes are about 70 millimeters long, king size about 84, 100s are 100 and 120s are 120 (Wikipedia). A case built for 85 millimeters won't close over 100s, and most metal cases stop at 100 millimeters. For 120s, a leather pouch that holds the whole pack, such as the Skyway Kendrick, is the simple answer.
Stated capacity assumes a snug fit. A case rated for 14 often holds 12 when it's loaded with 100s, and owners of several clip cases find the latch presses on the outer cigarettes when every slot is full. A flat case for 10 is about the size of a slim phone, while a 20-cigarette case is closer to a deck of cards. Thickness matters more than width for a shirt or trouser pocket.
Metal, Leather Or Whole Pack?
The traditional case is a flat metal box that opens into two halves, with each row held by a spring clip or an elastic band (Wikipedia). Clips grip firmly but can mark filters; elastic bands are gentler but stretch over time. Most "silver" cases are actually chrome- or nickel-plated steel or polished aluminum. Stainless steel and aluminum resist dents better than thin plated sheet, and many metal cases double as card wallets.
Flip-top boxes hold 20 loose cigarettes behind a magnetic or snap lid. They're quick to use but thicker than a clamshell. Leather pouches and sealed plastic boxes take the whole pack, so there's no reloading, but soft leather won't stop crushing the way metal does.
If you want something to keep for decades, look past mass-market cases. Hansaware still strikes nickel-silver cases in Germany from dies dating to the 1920s and 1930s and sells replacement elastic bands (Hansaware), and S.T. Dupont makes calf-leather cigarette cases (S.T. Dupont).
Care, Travel And Safety
Wipe plated metal with a soft, dry cloth; abrasive polish can wear through the plating. Keep leather dry and away from heat, and replace stretched elastic bands or a loose clip rather than the whole case. Check a spring latch now and then, since a weak latch is the most common complaint about clamshell cases.
Cases with a built-in electric lighter follow airline lighter rules. The TSA allows electronic and arc lighters in carry-on bags only, not checked bags, and the switch must be protected against firing by accident (TSA).
We checked every brand on this list in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall database and found no recalls of these cases. A February 2026 recall of novelty toilet-shaped lighters sold under the Somgem name (CPSC) covers a different product, not the waterproof case.
