This wiki has been updated 18 times since it was first published in March of 2019. If you’re looking to warm up a room or your office, you can't beat a ceramic heater when it comes to high performance and low energy consumption. They’re small, but powerful, without getting hot enough to pose safety risks when operated properly. They range from oscillating towers to personal models that sit on your desktop. As a rule, use them on a flat surface and never leave them unattended. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

January 29, 2021:

These days, almost everybody has some kind of virtual assistant in their home. That is why we added the Atomi Smart 2nd Gen to our recommendations this year. Not only is it an effective heater, but it is also extremely convenient since you can control it via an app or by voice when paired with an Alexa or Google Assistant device. We also added the Lasko 5586 as another remote-operated option, though this one lacks smart connectivity. If you want a model that is small and stylish, the Honeywell UberHeat HCE200W is the way to go, though it isn't something you would just toss in a backpack or side bag to take to the office like you can with the AmazonBasics 500-Watt.

March 27, 2019:

Many people swear by their small-but-mighty ceramic heaters to get them through cold seasons, both at home and in the office. Not only do they warm up quickly, but their plastic casing stays cool, for safety. Speaking of which, most come with built-in safeguards, like automatic shutoff after tipping over. Several that made our list have this feature, as well as overheat protection, including the Honeywell UberHeat Adjustable and the Brightown Portable. For an easily transportable selection that can come with you to work and back home again, look to the AmazonBasics 500-Watt; while it doesn’t offer the multiple heat settings that most others provide, it does a great job of warming a single person by sitting right on a desk. And you can’t beat an oscillating model to spread warmth around an entire room, which is great for family room gatherings. Both the Comfort Zone Tower and Opolar 1500W offer this convenient feature, the latter of which also resists condensation, making it a popular choice to warm up a drafty bathroom in winter. Although ceramic heaters generally operate relatively cool to the touch, always supervise young children and pets around them.
