The WeatherTech Child Car Seat Protector now leads because it's a thin, firm molded tray, and the biggest worry car seat technicians raise about these mats is thick, squashy padding that hides a loose install. The Munchkin Elite Seat Guardian, the old Brica Elite under a new name, stays, and so does Smart Elf, now sold as the Smart Elf Two-Pack. New here are the Safety 1st Deluxe, from a car seat maker, plus the Lusso Gear Seat Protector, Helteko Two-Pack, Morrols MR-CSP02 and Funbliss FB2003.
The Active Pets and Viewpets picks were pet seat covers, so they're gone. We couldn't find the Babyseater or Bebe by Me mats for sale, and the Diono Super Mat, Summer Infant DuoMat and the older Munchkin mat are unavailable. The Prince Lionheart Seatsaver is nearly sold out.

For safety, check with your car seat’s manufacturer as to whether the use of this type of product is permitted. (The owner’s manual would be the best place to start.) While some allow for such a buffer, others may tell you nothing should be placed between their product and the vehicle’s seat. Anything that interferes with a car seat’s proper installation compromises the protection it offers your child. In addition, when installing a car seat protector, be sure to follow the directions closely that come with it.
Check The Car Seat Manual First
Kick mats that hang on the back of the front seat and full seat covers are different things.
There's no safety standard for seat protectors. The federal crash standard for child seats doesn't mention them, so a mat sold as crash tested is relying on the maker's own testing (CSFTL). What counts is the car seat's manual. Graco allows mats, towels and blankets under its seats. Dorel and Evenflo name a towel or their own mat. Clek and Diono allow only their own mat, and UPPAbaby publishes a list of approved mats from other brands (Safe Ride News). If the manual says nothing should go under the seat, skip the mat.
Kick mats that hang on the back of the front seat and full seat covers are different things. They can sit over side airbags, head restraints or the sensors that detect a passenger, so they need the vehicle maker's approval, not the car seat maker's. Keep heavy things out of the front pockets, too: in a crash, a full water bottle becomes a projectile (Safe Ride News).
The One-Inch Test, With And Without The Mat
Thick fabric can compress in a crash, and grippy backings can make a seat feel snug when it isn't. Technicians at CSFTL suggest a simple check. Install the car seat over the mat and confirm it moves less than 1 inch side to side and front to back at the belt path. Then slide the mat out without loosening anything, re-buckle or reattach the lower anchor strap, and test again. If you have to tighten the seat again, the mat is too thick to use (CSFTL). Capital One's car guide repeats the same 1-inch check (Capital One).
Make sure the mat doesn't cover the lower anchors or block the belt path. Skip shelf liner: technicians dropped it from training because it can mask a loose install too. Recheck the fit every few months, since foam flattens and mats shift with daily use.
Molded Rubber Or Quilted Fabric
Most mats are quilted polyester or Oxford fabric over foam, with a strap for the headrest, non-slip dots underneath and a mesh pocket on the front. They cover more of the seat back and catch kicks, but the padding is what can hide a loose install. A molded rubber tray like the WeatherTech one is thin and firm, holds spills in a raised rim and wipes clean, but it covers less of the seat back. Car seat makers also sell their own mats, such as Munchkin and Safety 1st, which matters if your seat's manual allows only its maker's mat.
A car seat dent on cloth upholstery usually fades on its own in time. Leather and vinyl hold a dent longer, and light leather can pick up dye from a dark backing on hot days, so check the backing material.
