The 8 Best Biometric Padlocks
This wiki has been updated 20 times since it was first published in October of 2018. You've got stuff, and you want to protect it, but between building entry codes, ATM PINs, and passwords for a dozen websites, your brain doesn't need one more thing to remember. The ability to use a finger to quickly access that backpack, gym locker, or bicycle will mean no one can get in but you, and you won't have to go rummaging through random Post-its to find a combination you set a year ago. When users buy our independently chosen editorial recommendations, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.
Editor's Notes
December 22, 2020:
We did our best to focus on locks that come from reputable companies, though admittedly that is hard in a category dominated by obscure brands no one has ever heard of. With this in mind, we looked at the Master Lock 4901DLH, since it comes from a company known for making high-quality locks. Unfortunately though, their technology isn't quite up to par, so we weren't comfortable recommending it at this time. Without a doubt, the Tapplock TL203A and Tapplock Lite have the most robust build and offer the best long-term reliability. That being said, they don't come cheap, so those searching for budget-friendly options will have to look elsewhere. Another thing to note is that while many of these are weatherproofed, such as the previously mentioned Tapplock models and the Sharper Image Digital Swing Panel and MyPin HS0212, none should be left outdoors for days on end exposed to the elements.

This category is dominated by portable locks designed for use with backpacks and gym lockers, with most options having the basic feature of a few fingerprints and long standby times. The most notable unique features are remote access, alarm sounds, and the ability to sync with a phone app. Very few heavy-duty options available, which is why they fetch a premium price, but for those who want to secure a laptop at a coffee shop, there are a wealth of choices.
